Occupational Therapy Team Lead

Job overview

You will be working as a member of the rehabilitation therapy team based at Queen Victoria Memorial (QVM) Hospital in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. The team specialises in the treatment and management of patients with a range of conditions including frailty, falls, amputees, stroke and plus size. You will be a clinical and professional lead to the in-patient OT team consisting of band 6, 5 and 4 staff. You will provide highly specialised assessment and treatment for patients with complex conditions, and provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers and relatives, and other non-professionals. You will work closely with the Physiotherapy Team Lead and Ward Manager in the development of the service provided at QVM.

Main duties of the job

·         To take a lead role within occupational therapy at QVM on the advanced assessment and treatment of patients who may have diverse, chronic presentation and highly complex physical and psychological conditions. To contribute to the determination of clinical diagnosis and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner and ensure others do the same. 

·         To undertake the comprehensive specialist assessment of patients, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills using standardised assessments where applicable.

·         To formulate soundly reasoned prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing patient centred goals to address Occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the patients in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure. 

·         To formulate and deliver an individual Occupational Therapy management and treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using specialist clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills, including functional training, behaviour modification, patient education, exercise classes or individual treatment, adaptation of the home environment and other alternative options.

·         To carry out rehabilitation programmes with patients in conjunction with other members of the team to maximise patient’s functional ability in activities of daily living.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Relevant professional degree or diploma MSc or post graduate education and training to this level
  • Registration with HCPC
  • At least 2 years’ experience working at a Band 6/7 level within the area of rehabilitation
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of applicable management or leadership course

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist skills and knowledge related to rehabilitation (including stroke)
  • Experience of managing and supervising staff
  • Self-motivated and driven towards excellence
  • Up-to-date relevant clinical practice
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice relevant to professional speciality
  • Knowledge & understanding of provider organisations and NHS organisations
Desirable criteria
  • System One or equivalent clinical systems experience

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • IT skills - including competent use of microsoft programs.
  • Competent in the clinical skills appropriate for the patients / service users
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and diplomatically at all levels
  • Ability to use own judgement based on information available and to seek advice/escalate issues when unsure
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative with minimum supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to read & understand budget spreadsheets
