Job overview

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated, highly adaptable individuals to join our reception team at St. Mary’s Hospital Microbiology Department.

More than 10,000 samples are received and processed each year by the Microbiology department.  Each samples requires expert scientific know-how to process, with the aim of detecting and identifying pathogens suspected of causing infection and disease.   You role will be in supporting and facilitating these investigations.   

Main duties of the job

You will primarily be working at the reception area in the Microbiology Department. Duties will include sample receipting, data entry, answering telephone enquiries, house keeping and administrative duties as required by the microbiology team.  You will be required to work as part of a team and liaise with your colleagues on matters pertaining to day to day activities within Microbiology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  Main duties:

·         Receipt of pathology specimens via Vacuum Tube System or by hand

·         Sorting of pathology specimens as required ensuring details on request form and specimen match and date and time stamp

·         Allocation of laboratory accession number to microbiology samples and distribution of specimens to appropriate areas of the laboratory.

·         Liaising with other Trust staff e.g. doctors in clinics, patient transport service.

·         Entry of patient details and tests required onto laboratory computer system; checking information with requestors if discrepancies are noted.

·         Collection and sorting of laboratory reports for distribution, answer telephone enquiries and transmit laboratory results by telephone.

·         Receipt of microbiology parcels delivered to Pathology.

·         Packaging and delivery of dirty laundry to collection point (for Pathology) and sorting, distribution and storage of clean laundry (for Pathology).

·         Disposal of clinical waste in microbiology.

·         Filing of laboratory paperwork.

·         Daily, weekly and monthly house keeping duties

Receipt, unload and store supplies, reagents and consumables as they arrive.
