We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about medicines, how they are managed by patients, who would like to help provide patients with valuable knowledge and understanding to ensure safe and effective use of medicines, have a rewarding job role.

You will be part of a fantastic team working to improve medicines optimisation and to ensure that our Pharmacy and Medicines Management service continue to consistently meet the needs of our patients’ and users.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The following are essential: NVQ level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent and are registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

You should have evidence of extended scope of practice, working towards or agreement to undertake the requirements of this post e.g. Accreditation in Medicines Management including counselling skills and Final Accuracy Checking.

As part of an experienced technician team both at St. Mary’s and at Mountbatten Hospice you will be involved in medicines reconciliation, patient counselling, management of patient’s own drugs, advice and information to patients and ward staff, management of inpatient supplies of medication and support discharge at ward level. You will also be expected to take on additional roles and responsibilities such as working within the Care Co-ordination Centre where a technician makes follow up calls from the Medicine Helpline and following up Motive referrals, whilst also manning the phone for any incoming calls, SAM scheme, antimicrobial stewardship, Mental Health, and Hospice rotations working under a service level agreement (SLA), and an educational role.

Knowledge of the JAC EPMA computer system and Pharmacy automation systems is desirable. Excellent practical problem solving and prioritisation skills, and an ability to deal with all types of people and able to deal with pressured deadlines linked to bed pressures within the hospital are essential.

Applicants without the required experience / qualifications to meet the Band 5 position may be appointed at a training level and expected to achieve the qualifications and experience required to enable progression within approximately 12 months of appointment.

As well as a comprehensive in-house training programme, you will be supported in attending the ACPT and medicines management courses run by the regional training centre.

Undertake routine Medicine Management duties; this includes accurate reconciliation of  patients medication histories, ensure supplies of medicines are obtained in a timely manner, assessing patients’ own drugs for continued use during inpatient stay and the preparation and counselling of medicines for discharge.  This includes participation in the Medicines Helpline Service, SAM scheme and antimicrobial stewardship.

Provide technical pharmaceutical support in the dispensary, dispensing medicines in a safe, accurate and timely manner for in-patients and out-patients and providing counselling and advice on medicines to patients, relatives or carers.

Undertake routine Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) duties; perform final technical accuracy checks on in-patient, discharge and out-patient prescriptions that have been clinically screened by a pharmacist.

Undertake additional roles and responsibilities designated by the lead ward technician over and above the essential criteria for a band 5 technician.
