Job overview

This post is suitable for an experienced Specialist Grade Psychiatrist who would like to work alongside a Consultant Psychiatrist for the community of Ashford in East Kent.

The Ashford Team comprises of two parts, Mental Health Together (MHT) and Mental Health Together plus (MHT +). Both MHT and MHT + have been divided into pathways and streams respectively. In the role of prescriber, you would be expected to support and screen requests to see patients from both these parts of the team.  You will be working alongside the other prescribers in the team, namely:

1 full time Consultant Psychiatrist.

1 Full time SAS doctor (this post)

1 Non-Medical Prescriber

 

***Successful applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.***

Main duties of the job

The current team case load varies between 500-600 cases with a referral of approx. 5 cases per day. The doctor will work according to the new community mental health framework (CMHF) which has introduced Mental Health Together and Mental Health Together +.  The post holder would be expected to hold a small caseload of standard care patients who only require medical input prior to transfer to primary care. 

The post holder will be expected to take an active leadership role in the screening of referrals as well as assessment of new referrals.

The post holder will attend Trust management meetings as appropriate.

The post holder will provide teaching and training to Trust staff when time allows.

The post holder should have the ability to travel to all locations of the Trust in order to be able to undertake their duties. There is an expectation that patients will travel to the clinic base and where this is not possible, the post holder will be required to travel to them, as well as other places for work and training purposes. All expenses will be reimbursed according to national guidelines and trust policy.

While primarily responsible for delivering a quality clinical service, the post holder is also expected to be actively involved in the strategic development of the team and broader services, being involved with the team manager and locality manager in helping to steer the development of the service in line with the strategic direction of the organization.

Person specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

ELIGIBILITY

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification.
  • A minimum of six years in the relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
  • To be section 12(2) MHA 1983 approved .
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
  • Approved Clinician (AC) status/approval and be on the AC register or working towards AC status.

TRANSPORT

  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.
