Specialist Nurse - Inpatient Diabetes

Job overview

The Diabetes Nurse will be based at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, with a specific responsibility for the management and care of people with diabetes in hospital, supported by the band 7 Diabetes clinical nurse specialist, and the Lead Diabetes clinical nurse specialist.

The post holder will work as part of the Diabetes Inpatient Specialist Nursing Team and as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will increase diabetes awareness by disseminating knowledge and skills to other health care professionals and people with diabetes and their family /carers, thereby improving the day to day and long-term management of diabetes through enhanced self-care.

The post holder will contribute to the development of a high-quality local service for people with diabetes

Main duties of the job

To assist with the assessment, planning and implementation of education for people with diabetes, their families and carers, including both newly diagnosed and those with pre-existing diabetes. 

Act as an advocate for patients with diabetes in a person-centred approach to ensure care is delivered that meets the NICE requirements and NICE standards

Demonstrate the ability of being able to work independently and prioritise workload in line with clinical and service need within scope of practice. Supporting new development or ways of working as they emerge.

To give advice and information to the person with diabetes their family and carers, so that they may understand and where appropriate, have support from their family/carers to manage and control their diabetes more effectively.

To discuss any issues with treatment, plan care and advise others on the management of people with diabetes. This will include careful assessment and development of a personalised treatment plan with support from the senior Inpatients nurses if needed.

With the support of the senior Inpatient diabetes nurses, the diabetes nurse will advise patients, carers and health care professionals on the adjustment of insulin and oral hypoglycaemic agents. In accordance with current Trust and national guidelines, maintaining patient safety at all times.

To advise and support patients with health promotion where appropriate and refer onto the relevant services to support this if needed.

Desirable criteria
  • Post registration experience in a variety of acute clinical settings.
  • Relevant, demonstrable experience in diabetes

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN, Degree in Nursing or working towards degree or equivalent. Preparation of mentors or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Nursing Diabetes related qualification
