Job overview

The East Kent Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate was established in April 2000. Trauma surgery and elective day case activity is carried out on all 3 sites, elective inpatients are carried out in the new state of the art Elective
Orthopaedic Centre in Canterbury.

Outpatient clinics are held on all sites and the cottage hospitals at Folkestone, Herne Bay and Deal.

The post holder will be expected to provide general Trauma on call cover and subspecialty hands and wrists elective service. This includes programmed activities for 10 PAs.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the out-of-hours on call rota which is currently 1:15 weekdays and 1:11 weekends.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder must ensure that standards are developed through clinical audit, evidence-based research and appraisal

The post holder will aim to ensure all emergency patients are reviewed by a consultant within 14 hours of admission

The post holder will be required to participate in audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD. They are also expected to contribute to the development and maintenance of clinical protocols.

The post holder must demonstrate behaviour which supports and promotes the Trust vision
and values at all opportunities.

The post holder will be required to support the Lead Clinician, general and service managers and clinical director in policy and strategy development as a member of the division team.

  • Ability to direct and organise teams
  • Able to communicate clearly, avoiding jargon, with a range of different people. Builds strong and effective relationships with patients, families & colleagues with the ability to gain their trust & confidence
  • Ability to cope with considerable pressure as well as to adapt to constant change & new demands

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • Minimum 1-year NHS Experience
  • FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent
  • In possession of an appropriate Hand & Wrist fellowship
  • Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at consultant level
  • ATLS instructor
  • Research and academia related to speciality
  • Recognised Fellowship BSSH TIG in Hand & Wrist surgery (12 months minimum)

Clinical/Technical Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Possesses range of clinical knowledge, skills & information technology expertise.
  • In depth expertise in hand and wrist surgery, including management of complex wrist trauma
  • Ability to maintain & develop this knowledge.
  • Sees patients within a holistic context
Desirable criteria
  • Competence in wrist reconstructive procedure

Intellect and Education

Essential criteria
  • Shows an approach based on critical enquiry and evidence-based medicine
  • Embraces evidence-based practice & Audit
  • Interest in research & development Shows breadth of awareness & a range of problem-solving skills
  • Encourages ongoing learning & an educative culture, both for self and others
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification
  • Higher degrees in academia
  • Publications in speciality in peer-reviewed journals within last 5 year
