Job overview

For entry into the Specialty Doctor grade, applicants must have at least 4 years full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis) at least 2 of which will be in the specialty training programme in a relevant specialty. They must be able to work unsupervised when needed.

The post is paid on the Specialty Doctor pay scale and the point of scale will be offered in accordance with the Specialty Doctor Terms and conditions of pay 2021.

 

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide a high quality “shop floor” clinical presence, working in close co-operation with nursing, managerial and medical colleagues to provide high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

Participate in research, teaching, audit and governance programmes 

The successful applicant will join the Adult Medicine Team at Darent Valley Hospital.

 

There is opportunity to rotate through the following specialties (which can be discussed at interview:

Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Renal Medicine, Respiratory, Ageing and Health, Acute Medicine, Gastroenterology, Stroke, Diabetes & Endocrinology.

The post does include participation in on call rota for medical registrar and the current General Medical Registrar on Call Rota is 1 in 10 intensity.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities of the post

  • Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-
  • The appointee will cover inpatients under consultant supervision.
  • They will take part in consultant ward rounds.
  • They will ensure that GP electronic discharge letters containing all relevant information are sent.
  • The appointee will be expected to give advice when required to clinical nurse practitioners and to advise junior medical staff where appropriate.
  • They will ensure that case notes are properly completed, drug prescriptions are regularly reviewed, appropriate investigations are carried out and the results acted upon – and made available for consultant ward rounds.
  • To prove of a first class clinical service to our patients
  • To provide sufficient information to colleagues during handover to ensure consistency of care
  • To supervise and teach junior clinical staff, including workplace based assessments (WPBAs)
  • To participate in the teaching, research, audit and governance programmes within the Department
  • To engage in personal development and appraisal processes – to achieve revalidation with the GMC
  • To work towards and comply with National targets

  • • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • • MRCP(UK) full certification or equivalent by time of appointment

Eligibility

  • • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO • affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in • line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice including:
  • • Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competences in medicine at time • of application & CT/ST2 competences in medicine (as defined by the • curricula relating to Core Medical training) by the commencement of the • ST3 training post (August 2012 or later), supported by evidence from • work-based assessments of clinical performance (DOPS, Mini-CEX, • CBD, ACAT) and Multi-Source

Career Progression
