Job overview

The Trust conducts surgical services over two main sites: Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) Dartford, and Queen Mary’s Hospital (QMS) Sidcup. We have a combined 13 theatres over the two sites, with surgical specialties including orthopaedics, urology, general/vascular surgery, ENT and gynaecology. Robotic surgery is now available for colorectal and gynaecology patients. There is an OR1 for advanced laparoscopic surgeries at DVH.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will cover anaesthetic lists at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup. These lists include specialities like Gen Surgery, Major Colorectal, Urology, Gynaecology, ENT, Orthopaedics/Trauma, Obstetrics and out of theatre anaesthesia (for e.g. Cardiology). They may be required to stabilise and transfer critically ill children. The ICU team generally looks after the critically ill adults but the appointee may be called in to assist the ICU team. They will be responsible for assessing and managing airway related issues in emergency and elective patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There is a busy maternity unit with over 5,500 deliveries per year and a well-established epidural service. There is dedicated consultant obstetric anaesthetic cover during the week. We have recently started high risk obstetric clinics and are seeing more patients preoperatively. There are dedicated daily trauma lists as well as 8am to 2pm trauma lists at weekends.

  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council

  • Minimum of 12 years medical experience since primary medical qualification
  • Adheres to professional requirements of annual appraisal, job planning and reviews of performance and progression
  • Demonstrates the professional values and behaviours set out in Good Medical Practice Provides safe and effective general and regional anaesthesia, and procedural sedation, independently for all patients1
  • Previous experience working in the NHS
  • Ability to lead resuscitation teams and safely transfer critically ill patients1

  • Demonstrated ability to provide safe and effective immediate care for critically ill patients of all ages
