This is a new post and the position has become available following the approval of a business case for the expansion and further innovation of our current services.

 The post holder will be joining an expanding clinical team at an exciting time in the department’s development. The position is full time, based on a 10 PA job plan, however, candidates who wish to work less than full time will also be encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be joining an expanding clinical team at an exciting time in the department’s development. This post is a new cardiology post for the development and expansion of pacing & device capacity and its associated workload. The appointee will complement the other 7 substantive consultant cardiologists.

Along with the other consultant cardiologists, the post holder would be expected to support the provision of a comprehensive cardiology service for adult patients, both inpatients and outpatients from within our catchment area and provide advice on the management of cardiac problems at the request of other consultants and our local GPs and community services.

The post holder is not expected to participate in the general medical on-call rota

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Inpatient services: Chestnut Ward, is the dedicated cardiology inpatient ward, with 21 beds, including 5 side rooms. It is located close to the AMU, medical HDU and ICU. The consultant team have recently implemented a “Consultant of the Week’ working model based around the following principles and objectives:

  • Enhanced continuity of care = improved safety
  • More consistent messages to patient, relatives and staff including junior doctors, greater appreciation of the effect or outcome of individual consultant’s decisions
  • Increased consultant oversight of direct patient care
  • Less opportunity for ‘loss of information’ due to a lack of or multiple handovers
  • Reduced omissions of care
  • Provides structure for more detailed patient review and more effective, time-efficient decision-making
  • Consistent, more readily available support to the junior doctors and nursing staff
  • ‘Out-of-hours’ acute cardiology advice and temporary wire insertion service is provided by the COW (some additional prospective cover arrangements may also apply).
  • COW week extends to provide the weekend ward round cover à better & safer care and treatment planning including weekend discharges to support flow of emergency patients through the trust. A weekday off is offered as compensatory time-off for the on-call provision.

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC Recognised Medical Degree (MBBS or Equivalent).
  • MRCP (UK or Ireland) or equivalent
  • CCT in Cardiology or be eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview date
  • • Evidence of training and competence in loop implant, single & dual chamber pacing implantation, programming & management
Desirable criteria
  • Other degrees, e.g. BSc
  • MSc, MD, PhD
  • Competence in biventricular/CRT device implantation.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education
  • Awareness of the principles of clinical governance, Good Medical Practice & Information Governance
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and Clinical Audit
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in Clinical Governance and Clinical Audit

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Competent in temporary pacing wire insertion
  • Ability to make decisions at Consultant level
  • Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to effectively undertake the role of Consultant
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of IT-based patient information systems.
  • Ability to inspire, lead and motivate a team.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full and independent management of a general cardiology clinical patient workload
  • Wider experience in General Internal Medicine as it pertains to acute, general and ambulatory cardiology
  • Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates
  • Experience of collaborative clinical or laboratory research
Desirable criteria
  • To have published clinical work in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to teach and support learning activities of nursing, technical and other clinical staff
