Job overview

North Kent Pathology Service is offering a permanent position opportunity for Central Specimen Reception (CSR) supervisor. This pivotal role will help manage and support the CSR service in the preparation of samples received for diagnostic and specific patient care preceding the analytical phase of sample testing

It is envisaged that this role will provide a major role in the training and service development and supporting staff.

Main duties of the job

To manage the day-to-day operations of Central Specimen Reception (CSR) for North Kent Pathology Service (NKPS).  This area of Pathology is for the preparation of samples received for diagnostic and specific patient care preceding the analytical phase of sample testing.

The role includes; participation in training and service development, the support and monitoring of KPIs specific to the delivery of quality practices and service across NKPS; trouble-shooting and evaluation of service pathways and functions; stock management; administrative tasks including audits, documentation and scheduling meetings; management of referral samples and research projects. The post holder will facilitate teaching and training for CSR Teams and support Trust staff with sample queries

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support the delivery of a high quality, effective specimen reception service within Pathology.

1.            Technical responsibilities:

2.1       Supporting the management of 24/7 CSR Service provision.

The implementation, use, training and administration of all CSR Functions across both Medway and Dartford Trusts and NKPS CSR Hub and Spoke arrangements. This is  including partaking in creation of user requirement specification specific to user requirements, for sample types and

collection methods,   assessing continual CSR performance aligned to KPIs for ED and Acute services users as well as community and research / send away pathways and service provision. and standard operating procedures (SOP)

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • GCSE’s including English Language, Mathematics and a science subject
  • Evidence of CPD
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent level plus theoretical or applied training to diploma equivalent level of experience

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of CSR functions and transportation pathways including send away testing services.
  • Computer literate with good keyboard skills
  • Demonstrable analytical and technical skills.
  • Be proficient in trouble-shooter issues of CSR pathways.
  • Able to plan and manage staff rotas across a wide ranging service on both sites.
  • Able to organise own time effectively and work to schedules and deadlines.
  • Work autonomously with CSR Services
  • Once fully trained to be a cascade trainer.
  • Ability to maintain standards of accuracy and hand to eye coordination in repetitive manual techniques.
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Basic knowledge of biomedical procedures
  • Tact and diplomacy. Detailed understanding of CSR Policies/procedures.
  • Help identify any potential savings within Pathology and particular to CSR services.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time and accurately check and transcribe information from paper or electronic data.

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience in providing clinical or technical services to patients/clients e.g. working in Pathology or clinical environment providing standard diagnostic tests or advanced skills in booking in and sending away to reference testing services.
  • Competence in Blood Sciences services to thelevel required for the post; to be achieved within 6 months of starting the post.
  • At least 1 years’ experience in a clinical laboratory aligned to demonstrable experience of working within an acute hospital environment.
  • Able to demonstrate recent knowledge of advances in Pathology services such new testing methods and sample types.
  • Knowledge of medical and basic laboratory terminology.
