This is a new and exciting role created for the Trust and an excellent opportunity for an inspirational and passionate individual with a strong track record in Environmental, Sustainability and Energy management to oversee the development and implementation of our Green Plan, Energy Strategy and NetZero commitments.

This role involves managing energy contracts, providing expert advice on sustainability initiatives and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. You will collaborate with senior managers and engage with external stakeholders to drive sustainability improvements across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

This role is diverse and acts as the Trust expert in areas such as environmental compliance, waste compliance, management of utilities and sustainability.

This role will provide guidance and advice to Trust members to ensure the Trust is compliant with legislation/NHS directives and will drive the Green Committee and Champions to deliver the Trust Green Plan within the timescales agreed.

As the Trust expert, there will be significant liaison and input with external bodies such as the HCP, ICB, NHSe etc as well as other Trusts and external providers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

This role acts as the Trust expert in all matters relating to sustainability, ensuring that the Trust is fully compliant with all elements of legislation and NHSe directives.

Accountable for all elements of utilities from strategic planning and tendering of services to obtain best value for money as well as ensuring utilities are sustainable.

Responsible for Waste Management. This will involve sourcing and implementing the correct receptacle for each waste source and/or finding solutions for limited space in particular areas to ensure the Trust is using the waste contract effectively and complying with the Green Plan.

Accountable for ensuring the Trust is compliant with environmental and waste legislation by identifying obligations and ensuring all relevant departments have processes & procedures in place.

Accountable for developing the Trust’s sustainability Green Plan and ensuring that the Trust are on target for delivering new zero by 2040/45. This includes ensuring that the working group leads and champions are fulfilling agreed objectives and actions.

The role is responsible for ensuring accuracy in respect of provision of data for the ERIC return (Estates Return & Information Collection), ICS/ICB reporting and reporting on carbon reductions as detailed in the Green Plan.

There will also be a requirement to manage reporting on utilities, including collation of meter readings and checking of utility invoices. In addition, there is a requirement to forecast usage and budget requirements. Therefore, the role will need extensive analytical skills.

The post-holder will contribute to a wide range of environmental activities, including behavioural change programmes, sustainability and net zero initiatives, and support the delivery of the Trust’s environmental objectives and relevant commitments with the Green Plans.

Collate, analyse and present waste and environmental performance data / information to a wide range of stakeholders for the purpose of exploring opportunities to improving the Trust’s waste and environmental performance.

There is also a requirement for longer term planning as this role is responsible for reviewing and updating sustainability strategy, amending as legislative requirements or the Trust changes.

The role will need to ensure that the strategy and day to day activity align, engaging management as necessary to reinforce directives.

Responsible for devising and implementing audits across all subject matters and management systems to ensure the Trust is fully compliant. Devise action plans with teams where necessary and oversee to ensure actions are completed within agreed timescales.

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Masters degree in one of more subject matter relative to the post (sustainability, environmental, waste) or extensive relevant experience
  • Evidence of CPD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an environmental or sustainability environment either within the public sector of private sector
  • Project management experience and knowledge gained from managing major projects
  • Programme management experience and knowledge gained from managing transformation programmes
  • Training over the course of the career in waste, environmental and sustainability
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in transitioning teams from on-premises file repositories to cloud-hosted
  • Previous experience in a similar, senior, position within the NHS or Private sector
  • Significant experience of Microsoft Power Apps suite including integrations between Power Apps, Power BI, and Power Automate in a multitenant environment.
  • Significant experience of Microsoft SharePoint file management best practice and integrations into existing teams
