Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for Divisional Medical Director (DMD) in the division of Surgery, Critical and Planned Care (SCPC)The successful applicant will have a strong interest in clinical leadership and strategic development with previous evidence of leadership roles. A commitment to education and training or other evidence of academic achievement will be an advantage. The appointee will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and be professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer.

The Trust welcomes both internal and external Consultants for the DMD role. The appointee will devote 4 PAs to the Divisional Medical Director role. Interested external applicants are encouraged to make contact early, to allow exploration of the additional 6PA clinical role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Divisional Medical Director (DMD) will have responsibility for the strategic planning and the leadership and delivery of the division’s clinical services and performance, working with the Divisional Director of Operations (DDO) and the Divisional Director of Nursing (DDN). You will ensure that all staff are aligned with the Division's and Trust's objectives and are working in effective multidisciplinary /multi professional teams.

You will ensure that services adopt a continuous quality improvement approach and comply with clinical audit standards to ensure the delivery of high quality care and performance standards are achieved throughout the division within the agreed budget.

As the lead for the division, you have day to day line management responsibility of the DDO and DDN, however you are expected to work together to lead and manage the division as the Leadership Triumvirate.    The professional leadership of the DDO and DDN will sit with the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Nursing Officer respectively (such as appraisals, performance management, sickness, leave etc.)

Essential criteria
  • BM BS and postgraduate fellowship/CCT holder.
  • Practicing clinician at DGT
Desirable criteria
  • MBA or other appropriate management postgraduate qualification.

  • Leadership – highly developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams and have them understand the Trust’s and Divisions performance expectations.

  • Able to build rapport and credibility with senior clinical and managerial teams in the delivery of clinical governance, performance targets, service delivery and change programmes.
  • Strategic and business planning – able to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively and gain agreement to relevant plans.
  • Analysis – proven numeric and analytical skills.
  • Ability to analyse highly complex problems and to develop practical and workable solutions to address them.

  • Able to prioritise work in the face of competing demands.
  • Strong sense of personal and team accountability coupled with a clear understanding of the boundaries around delegated authority.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a CD
  • Knowledge and experience of leading significant change to patient services, delivering tangible and sustained improvements.
  • Experience of delivering objectives linked to clinical governance such as research, audit cycles and managing risk appropriately.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining active partnerships with stakeholders in the development of services.
  • Experience of improvement measurement systems and understanding of the role of measurement in performance improvement.
  • Experience of managing large numbers of staff/multi-disciplinary teams.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using redesign methodologists
  • Experienced in directorate Management
