Sister/Charge Nurse - Pre-Operative Assessment QMH

We are seeking an enthusiastic nurse to join our dynamic team!

As a trained nurse, you will work alongside specialist nurses, consultant anaesthetists, and surgeons. We are looking for someone with excellent leadership and communication skills to lead our nursing pre-assessment team at QMH. You will also liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team within the hospital and community settings. Previous experience as a senior Band 5 nurse or acting charge nurse in a pre-assessment department is essential.

In this role, you will be responsible for guiding and supporting your team. You will conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments for patients undergoing elective surgeries in specialties such as orthopaedics, gynaecology, general surgery, and urology.

Flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and a willingness to rotate through all the clinics currently held are crucial for this role.

This is a full-time position, working Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM

As a Band 6 Charge Nurse, you will be responsible for the daily management of staffing and pre-operative assessment clinics for both elective day cases and inpatients. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, you will provide a comprehensive pre-operative assessment service. You are expected to work without direct supervision and assist in the training and supervision of both qualified and unqualified staff.

Clinical responsibilities:

The post holder will manage and train nursing staff to assist in the assessment of each patient, and will advise and familiarise medical staff in current protocol and procedures on the assessment of patient, providing training and guidance as appropriate.

The post holder will be authorised (following training) to request pathology investigations, and will make clinical decision having regards thereto, and refer to medical teams as appropriate, both in the assessment clinic and the ward environment.

The post holder will subsequently be responsible for the necessary liaison to ensure the appropriate admission to referral for further management in liaison with the lead anaesthetist.  This will involve direct liaison with surgical and anaesthetic staff, together with other agencies including GP’s and Community Staff.  The post holder will monitor and assist in the on-going care of the patient prior to admission.

To formulate evaluate and update criteria for referral to GP, OPD to see a Consultant and or admission to an acute ward in an emergency.

To establish, monitor and maintain relevant safe professional standards of patient care within the clinical environment through an effective process of quality assurance.

To assist in formulating review and agree relevant policies and procedures for practice as appropriate for patient and service needs.

Participate in multi-disciplinary audit.

To ensure patient information is updated regularly to ensure patients receive fully informed consent, using appropriate language and accurate information.

To perform ECG recording and venepuncture on patients as required within the clinic settings.

After training, perform simple spirometry and calculate results, with the necessary referral to the lead Anaesthetist.

After training in accordance with the Trust policy, will be able to prescribe medications using the Patient Group Directions.
