As part of an expansion to our Radiology Services we are looking for enthusiastic individuals to come and join our dynamic Radiology Team at Darent Valley Hospital. We are looking for Band 5/6 Radiographers.

The successful candidates will be based at Darent Valley Hospital and Gravesend Radiology departments working in normal hours, along with out of hours as part of the out of hours team. There is an opportunity to rotate through the Radiology Department at Queen Marys Hospital Sidcup. Please note that Banding will be dependent on candidates experience and qualifications.

 

We currently have over 70 Radiographers working in our Trust and we have an extensive range of modalities including DR, CT, MRI, ultrasound, breast imaging, nuclear medicine, bone densitometry, Lithotripsy, interventional and cardiac angiography and all aspects of general and fluoroscopic radiography.

 

Radiographer role extension/CPD is actively encouraged and supported in Radiology. Examples being: Appendicular and Axial, CT Head, MRI and lower and upper GI reporting. We currently have one Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging.

 

With a view to seven day working and enhancing our Radiology Service - flexible hours are expected as part-time or full time, working weekends and evenings as part of core hours.

The Department is recognised for excellent education and Training opportunities with several staff undertaking post graduate studies.

The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Directorate. 

The post holder will:

Participate in all activities within the Radiology departments at Darent Valley Hospital and Gravesend hospital and possibly other hospital sites under DGT. Primarily provide a radiographic service to CT patients, A&E/UCC patients, GP patients, Outpatients, and Inpatients including mobile and Theatre Radiography.

Undertakes on-call/OH/shift working, standby/Nights and flexible working practices that meet the needs of the service.

To be involved in service developments within WCR division.

 Clinical responsibilities:

 To work in CT scanning, generals, theatres and mobiles based at DVH site as a member of the team

To assess the clinical justification of Radiography referrals in line with both national regulations (IRMER 2017) and local protocols.

To act with delegated authority as practitioner for plain film radiography referrals.

To act as an operator under IRMER (2017).

To liaise with referral source where clarification is required regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination.

To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers.

To act as a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral.

To act as a patient and staff advocate in Radiation protection issues.

To assess specific communication needs of individual patients.

To ensure patients have agreed to exposure to Ionising Radiation prior to the examination.

To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination.

To acquire diagnostic images and physically position the full range of patient presentations accurately for examinations taking into account patient limitations and adapting standard techniques where necessary.

To match the clinical indications presented by the referrer to an appropriate departmental protocol in CT scanning.

To operate advanced software on specialised Radiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordination, e.g. bolus chasing, image reformatting and dynamic imaging.

To review images and ensure that supplementary imaging procedures are considered prior to patient departure from the Department.

To ensure that images are presented for reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.

To ensure that urgent findings are communicated and patients are directed accordingly.

To flag radiographic abnormalities using the appropriate system of work in place, e.g red dot system.

To review and comment on continuing appropriateness of imaging protocols.

To participate in the delivery of an out of hours service.

To work unsupervised within the out of hours arrangements.

To set up and clear a basic sterile trolley for interventional procedures.

To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised where necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens contaminated by bodily fluids.

To participate in patient monitoring or administration of oxygen under supervision.

To ascertain from the patient, patient’s guardian or the referrer, patient’s suitability for receipt of intravenous contrast media.

To perform/supervise junior staff in intravenous cannulation and manual injection of contrast agent.

To administer intravenous contrast media using a pressure injector.

  • State Registered Radiographer

  • Certificate of competency in IV cannulation, along with the ability to practise these skills.

Knowledge

  • Able work safely and effectively without direct supervision but with Senior Staff guidance where necessary
  • Good communication skills with patients, colleagues and other Trust workers
  • In depth knowledge of all routine radiographic procedures
  • A working knowledge of the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017
  • Knowledge of the College of Radiographers statements for Professional Conduct
  • Knowledge of the Health Professions Council Standards of Proficiency
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to work safely, avoiding the hazards that may be encountered in Radiology

EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant experience working in a cross-sectional modality ,such as CT
  • Provide training/mentoring such as IV cannulation for staff within CT
