Job overview
We are looking for a Simulation Fellow to be a member of our cohesive team, working in the Medical Education Department and in clinical areas helping improve the postgraduate and undergraduate education through simulation based education. The simulation fellow will be delivering in-situ and simulation suite simulation based education programmes, including the expansion of multiprofessional simulation.
The role will allow for the opportunity to develop teaching skills, extending knowledge of educational theory and undertaking educational research. It will suit an individual who has an interest in medical education and educational research and want to take time out to focus on these interests for a year.
The level will be CT2+/ST4 or equivalent. The Simulation Fellow, as well as being responsible to Human Factors & Simulation Specialist Lead, and if required a speciality supervisor, the post holder will also be supported by a dedicated team of Medical Education Officers.
This is a very exciting time and an excellent opportunity for a doctor who is looking at developing their teaching skills in a supportive environment.
We will encourage you to undertake and will fund a PGCert in education or other related PGCert and you will have a study leave budget of £800, which will allow you to attend courses in your specialty.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Examples of the types of sessions you will be facilitating;
- FY1/2 simulation, skill drills, delivery of the chosen specialty education programme.
- IMT SBE sessions
- Medical student SBE sessions
- High fidelity maternity and neonatal SBE and skills & drills session
- Surgical and Procedural skills days – supported by subject matter experts
- Regional Anaesthetic SBE courses - supported by subject matter experts
- In-situ simulation sessions across the medical, surgical and unplanned care directorates
- Human Factors teaching
- Assisting with the debrief course and faculty development sessions
Education and development responsibilities:
- To develop personal skills in education including:
- An understanding of adult educational theories;
- Knowledge of educational theory and undertaking educational research
- Assessment and evaluation methodology;
- Knowledge of human factors and crisis resource management and their role in simulation-based learning and the wider clinical environment
- Participate in the development and teaching of new and existing teaching courses, for postgraduate and undergraduate trainees, including simulation programmes.
- Undertake evaluation of courses and teaching delivered to ensure that trainees’ needs are continually met.
- Undertake research in medical education and aim to present research and novel ideas at local, national and international meetings.
- Assist in the completion of work-based assessments for trainees.
- Participation in medical education committee meetings.

Education and Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Eligible for Full GMC Registration and License to Practice at the time of appointment
- ALS Provider
- Demonstrates excellent skills in spoken and written English to be able to teach medical topics efficiently
- Evidence of teaching
- Eligible for a CT2
Desirable criteria
- MRCP/MRCPCH (or part of), MRCEM, MRCS, FRCA part I
- Intercalated BSc or equivalent Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD
- Publications in recognised medical or academic journals
- Poster presentations
- Attendance at medical courses and conferences
- ALS Instructor
- Evidence of a teaching qualification
- Previous experience in simulation

- Evidence of active participation in audit
Desirable criteria
- An understanding of NHS management and resources.
- Leadership or management roles.
- Previous experience in delivering education, ideally in an inter-professional setting.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated experience with simulation-based education events
- Demonstrated experience in research-based activities and data collection
