The Diabetic Specialist Lead Midwife will be an integral part of the service supporting the diabetes in pregnancy, birth and the postnatal safety initiatives. This includes leading a culture of individualised care that promotes a safe and positive pregnancy and birth experience.

The successful post holder will provide direct maternity care to service users who have pre-existing diabetes or a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM), in conjunction with the Obstetricians, Diabetes consultants, Diabetic Specialist Nurses, Dietician and wider multidisciplinary teams (MDT). 

The post holder will actively participate in the development of services to meet the needs of service users with diabetes, in line with local and National Guidance.

This role also incorporates training and education for healthcare professionals in the management and care of women with diabetes in pregnancy.

The post holder will work as a lead specialist midwife to facilitate high quality, effective, holistic and supportive pregnancy care for women  who have pre-existing diabetes or a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM)

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a DGT champion for women/birthing people  who have pre-existing diabetes or a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) and the expectation is that the post holder will be responsible for promoting good quality midwifery/ obstetric led interventions, which aim to improve outcomes for all women/birthing people with diabetes before, during, and after pregnancy.

Co-ordinate and facilitate the maternity diabetes service within the directorate working with the obstetricians, endocrine consultants, diabetes specialist nurse, dieticians and other members of the maternity diabetic team.

Develop and establish a midwife led pathway of care for women with gestational diabetes, including those who need to start insulin, from diagnosis to delivery.

Maintain a high profile in the clinical areas and to be accessible to women and their families.

 Act as a resource for all staff involved in maternity care, midwives, student midwives and maternity support workers. Providing evidence-based advice, support and information with regards to diabetes in pregnancy and childbirth.

Identify areas for research, audit and development relevant to midwifery and diabetes. Initiate and participate in research and clinical audit programmes and encourage other midwives to do the same.

Work alongside the Saving Babies Lives (SBL) Team and lead on key elements pertaining to the care of women with existing or newly diagnosed gestational diabetes.
