Main duties of the job

This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of the Orthodontic team at the Medway NHS Foundation Trust. The post is for a part-time locum consultant appointment with 4.2 PAs at the Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, Kent. The post is for 6 months starting in September 2024, or as soon as possible after this date, with a view to a substantive appointment in the future.

The locum Orthodontic Consultant would be part of a team of 3 Consultants providing a comprehensive orthodontic service to the people of West Kent and Medway. The post will involve multidisciplinary care for patients with the most complex problems, particularly those requiring orthognathic surgery, as well as advice and treatment for all appropriately referred patients. The orthodontic department is also a spoke for the South Thames Cleft Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will have responsibilities to deliver and supervise NHS clinics within the department delivering high quality patient care and will also contribute to continuing education, professional development, and clinical audit within the department.

  • New patient clinics
  • MDT clinics
  • Orthodontic treatment of patients with significant malocclusions, including many requiring multidisciplinary management e.g. orthognathic and hypodontia patients
  • Orthodontic treatment of patients with medical problems or special needs
  • Orthodontic treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate
  • Treatment of patients with OSA
  • Clinical supervision of the StR, two Orthodontic Therapists and Specialty Dr
  • Supervision of nurse-led clinics
  • Engage fully with the care of patients outside the department, providing a prompt opinion on request from consultant colleagues in other specialties
  • Work with the service manager and consultant colleagues in the efficient running of the department. 

 

Joint Clinics with Other Specialties

  • Joint Orthognathic MDT Clinics are held three times a month with Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Mr K Sneddon and Mr M Shelley.
  • Full day Cleft Lip and Palate MDT Clinics are held once a month with Miss N Timoney and Miss L Ferguson, Consultant Cleft Surgeons.
  • Orthodontic/ Paediatric Dentistry MDT Clinics are held twice a month, run jointly with Dr Sarah Davies, Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry and Clinical Lead of the Medway Community Dental Service.

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council
  • On the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BDS or equivalent
  • Membership in Orthodontics or equivalent
  • Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Orthodontics or equivalent
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCT in Orthodontics

Training / Experience

Essential criteria
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved three year training programme in Orthodontics or equivalent for other European Economic Area (EEA) Nationals
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 2 year minimum training programme in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) in Orthodontics, or within 6 months of completion of training, or equivalent
  • Experience in the treatment of complex orthodontic, orthognathic and hypodontia patients
