We are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Medical Education (DME) to join our senior leadership team within the Corporate/Medical Education Directorate at Medway NHS Foundation Trust.

The DME will ensure that that medical education is aligned with the Trust Patient First strategy. The DME will also ensure that medical education is fully integrated with the delivery and future requirements of the service both operationally and strategically. Education is a core NHS responsibility, on a par with clinical activity, and as such the DME must ensure robust governance policies and procedures are in place.  

The DME will work closely with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), and is part of the CMO team.

Main duties of the job

The DME will provide strategic educational leadership to all involved in medical education, ensuring that high quality medical education is fully integrated within Clinical Groups and across the Trust with an appropriate balance of training opportunity and service delivery.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with Consultants representing their views on education and training to NHSE KSS and nationally, ensuring that there is a good balance between education and service in the structure of NHSE KSS rotations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The DME will be responsible for ensuring that high quality postgraduate medical education is an integral part of the Trust strategic objectives.

Will lead on the development of both Undergraduate & Postgraduate Medical Education strategy ensuring that the Trust values and operational plans are reflected in the objectives which are set.

Create and maintain governance structures that provide assurance to the Board and external parties (NHSE and General Medical Council) that doctors in post graduate training is of high quality and is meeting the needs of the future workforce.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered with a license to practise
  • • Completed CCT and be on the specialist register
  • • Up to date with annual appraisals
  • • Substantive consultant with at least 5 PAs within MFT or be a substantive consultant on the specialist register at another Trust able to provide at least 5 PAs (or pro rata for an applicant wishing to work less than full time)
  • • Fellowship/Membership of the relevant College (or equivalent)
  • • Fellowship/Membership of the relevant College (or equivalent)
  • • Higher degree
  • • To have completed the Educational Supervisor Training as approved by NHSE KSS
Desirable criteria
  • • Certificate, diploma or degree in Teaching/Education, or willingness to commence within one year of appointment
  • • To have completed or to complete the NACT Basics for Leadership in Medical Education (BLIME) course for new DMEs within one year of appointment
  • • Clinical leadership experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Broad experience of UK clinical practice at consultant or general practitioner programme director level and current role as a substanticve NHS consultant or general practitioner
  • • Previous experience as an educational supervisor
  • • Direct involvement in postgraduate medical education
  • • Previous experience of an organisational role
  • • Experience of managing change
  • • Previous experience of motivating and providing support to others
