Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will participate fully in the clinical activities of the Department, providing general emergency ENT cover 1:9 during the week, each ‘day’ being 14 hours from 6.00pm-8.00am, and 1:8 weekends, each ‘day’ being 24 hours from 8.00am-8.00am on Saturday and Sunday.  When on-call he/she will provide full support and advice to the StR and middle grade staff, and supervise/undertake whatever emergency surgery is required.  He/she will undertake on-call ward rounds on weekends in the course of delivering this on-call support, and be available to advise and support other specialties within the hospital as necessary.  Our unit provides ENT services for Darent Valley Hospital and its Dartford and Gravesham population, and almost all emergencies from that hospital are transferred to Medway if specialist ENT care is required.  However, on rare occasions it is necessary for the on-call Consultant to provide on-site care at Darent Valley, within their ITU or A&E Departments, occasionally making use of their theatres.

The appointee will have responsibility for all patients under his/her care, and will guide and help junior medical and non-medical staff in delivering this care.  He/she will work within the close working relationship that characterizes the Department, and support the philosophy of sub-specialisation whilst providing ‘generalist’ expertise as well.
