We are recruiting for a Team Lead Surgical and Critical Care Dietitian who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will undertake autonomous work across the surgical wards and critical care – including both the high dependency unit and intensive care.
The post holder’s team would also cover areas, such as a respiratory medicine, cardiac medicine and orthopaedics, and support the work of a dietetic apprentice. The post holder may be required to cover other areas, as caseload / service needs demand.
To take a lead role in supervision of the team under the leadership of the Lead for Dietetics, deputising in their absence. Other responsibilities may include attending and actively contributing at MDT meetings, board rounds to discuss patient cases, and discussing patient care, dietetic intervention, goals and discharge planning.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide timely dietetic care to patients, working effectively as part of the Acute Dietetic Team.
To provide cover to other areas in times of absence or clinical need.
To provide a 7 day and extended hours working pattern.
To educate members of the Medical team, Nursing staff, Student Nurses and other health care professionals as relevant to role.
Supervision more junior dietetic team members, aiding rotations and supporting their development.
Lead a team of dietitians, consisting of band 6 and band 5 dietitians, a dietetic apprentice and dietetic assistants.
Supervise students and dietetic apprentice during placements.
Support/lead Dietetic Assistants.
Produce and deliver educational material and dietetic resources to the team and wider MDT.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma/degree in Nutrition and Dietetics
- Current Health Professions Council registration
- Member of British Dietetic Association, ideally including relevant specialist group
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Competency in nutritional assessment of patients in varied clinical specialities in a range of population groups
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the issues involved with working in a busy acute setting
- Understanding of national and professional issues
- Understanding of clinical governance and relevant national guidelines
Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and application of artificial nutrition – both eneteral and parenteral nutrition are essential
- Experience of supervising Dietetic students
- Experience of responding to demand / prioritising work / managing a caseload in fast moving acute environment
- Involvement of developing department and service protocols
- Experience of managing patients within an MDT setting
