Specialty Doctor in Critical Care

Division:  Anaesthetics and Surgery

Grade: Specialty Doctor 

Salary: £52,530 - £82,400 per annum/pro rata

Contract Type: Permanent

Applicants will benefit from a job plan with protected SPA time. Successful candidates will have been trained to ST3 level or equivalent experience in anaesthesia or critical care. All candidates are required to be GMC registered. Success in the Primary FRCA would be desirable.

Post-holders will also be encouraged to develop an interest in medical education or quality improvement, and will be supported in doing so. There is opportunity for post holders to be involved in simulation training.

The post holder will have delegated responsibility for all the patients under care of the Consultants in critical care. He/she will refer to the Consultants when problems arise which are beyond his authority and/or experience.

The post holder must maintain liaison with colleagues who are on duty immediately before and after.

The post holder will participate in the resident duty rota with other middle and junior grade medical staff in the Department.

The post holder will be required to actively participate in clinical audit and implement its results and relate these to the Trust and Directorate policies on Clinical Governance.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree MBBS (or equivalent)
  • FRCS, MRCS or equivalent qualification
  • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training, at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty, or have equivalent experience.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council and a valid licence to practise with the General Medical Council

Knowledge

  • Wide experience in all areas of critical care practice.
  • Demonstates the underpinning subject-specific competencies relevant to the role setting and scope.
  • Knowledge of legal responsibilities relevant to the role, such as mental capacity and deprivation of liberty

Skills

  • Experience in clinical education
  • Willingness to participate in clinical research
  • Practical experience with invasive procedures relevant to critical care medicine.
