Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Nuclear Medicine department is a busy clinical department offering a comprehensive nuclear medicine service.

The Radiopharmacy supplies other trusts and generates a substantial income for the trust from this work.

The department has 2 SPECT/CT GE 16 slice CT gamma cameras which are state of the art, and new digital NM/CT 870 CZT recently installed May 2024.

A new Hologic Discovery A scanner has recently been installed and around 5000 DEXA scans are undertaken  within the osteoporosis unit.

The department has a particular interest and expertise in Oncology, Orthopaedic Imaging, Osteoporosis, Nuclear Cardiology and Thyroid and Parathyroid disorders. However, the full range of nuclear medicine is practised including paediatrics, urology, and neurology. The largest number of tests are isotope bone scans, cardiac myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), lung scans, thyroid scans, DAT scans, renograms and DMSA scans. There is one day set aside for paediatric work with specialist paediatric nurse support. Gated SPECT MPI studies with adenosine, rapiscan and dobutamine are performed on 3 days a week. A specialised thyroid service is offered by the nuclear medicine department combining isotope scanning with the thyroid clinic. The department has an interest in metabolic bone disease and undertakes  metabolic bone clinics and provision of osteoporosis services in the trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and FRCR
  • CCST/CCT/CESR or equivalent in (or will obtain within 6 months of interview date)
  • IELTS (Academic) level 7.5, or graduate of a Medical School in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA or Canada.
  • Radiology Degree

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Cross sectional CT/MRI/Ultrasound/Plain Film
  • Clinical Governance principles

Skills

Essential criteria
  • The post holder will have to be competent in CT, Plain Film and Ultrasound. MRI would be beneficial.
