Main duties of the job

The department of General Surgery provides the full range of general, colorectal, breast and endocrine surgical services to the local population in addition the hospital provides specialist urological cancer services to the region.

It is the vision of the department to develop Upper GI surgery and this role will involve developing this area of practice. Medway has been a leader in the adoption of acute laparoscopic cholecystectomy services and at the forefront of the Emergency laparotomy quality improvement project. There is fully functioning registrar hot clinic and this will be one of the key areas for further development along with the set up of the Upper GI Surgery Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A formal Job Plan will be agreed between the appointee and their lead Clinician, on behalf of the Medical Director, within three months after the commencement date of the appointee. The appointee is expected to contribute towards management of elective and emergency General Surgery conditions. The appointee will be on-call with 11 other members of the department. The on call rota will be a 1:12 cycle.

The appointee will be expected, in conjunction with his/her colleagues, to provide a comprehensive emergency surgical service including on call duties.

The key areas for the postholder will include:

  • Provision of clinical leadership in the delivery of a high quality emergency surgical service.
  • Providing teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level. A major role in the teaching of medical students is expected.
  • Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes, including reviews of manpower requirements.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a wide range of acute and elective general surgical conditions and have a special interest in benign Upper GI surgery.
  • Medway NHS Foundation Trust has established formal development and mentorship programme for newly appointed consultants including a mentorship approach to settling down as a new consultant. This will be supported by the Clinical Lead at Medway.
  • Abide by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or The Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR). Proposed CCT/CESR date must be within 6 months of interview if it has not already been awarded. via European Community Rights
  • FRCS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience to CCT standards.
  • Expertise in open and laparoscopic surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
