Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Mental Health of Learning Disability (MHLD) service in Kent and Medway as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Intellectual Disability. This is a new post which has been created by upgrade of a vacant part-time Consultant post and reconfiguration of Consultant catchment areas. The MHLD service provides specialist mental health care to people with an intellectual disability in Kent and Medway. The post holder will be a member of the West Kent MHLD Team and primarily provide Psychiatry input as necessary for people with an intellectual disability living in the Maidstone and Swale areas. The appointee will work with psychology and nursing colleagues to provide care in the community for people with an intellectual disability presenting with mental illness and/or challenging behaviour and needing specialist interventions. The post holder will become part of an established group of committed, experienced Consultants in the Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability and will be encouraged to make a major contribution to service innovation and development. Main duties of the job

The MHLD service comprises two locality teams covering West and East Kent. The post holder will work within the West Kent MHLD Team. Within each team Consultant Psychiatrists are primarily focused on one smaller catchment area within it, in this case ‘Maidstone & Swale’. This catchment area includes the towns of Maidstone and Sittingbourne and some areas near and the Isle of Sheppey. There is a whole time CT post to support the postholder. The postholder will also be supported with Maidstone & Swale patients by 4 sessions per week from a Specialty doctor. The West Kent MHLD Team has psychiatrists, nurses, and psychologists as part of its multi-disciplinary staffing. The MHLD service works closely with the community learning disability team (CLDT) in the Kent Community Health Foundation Trust which includes other professionals such occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.

The post holder will:

· provide psychiatric care to patients referred to the West Kent MHLD team (and contribute to cross cover for other areas if needed). Within the West Kent MHLD area the post holder will focus their clinical input on patients in the Maidstone & Swale area or ‘patch’.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCPsych
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

Transport

Essential criteria
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.

CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
