Practice Development Nurse - Haematology

Job overview

The Practice Development Nurse will work in partnership with the Matrons, Head of Nursing, Clinical Director and General Managers, in the development of  this service.  You should possess excellent communication skills,  be systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) trained and be visible and accessible with quality and standards as your priority. In addition you must be able to influence and negotiate in order to improve the haematology (SACT) pathway.

MTW is a large acute hospital trust in the south-east of England. We provide a full range of general hospital services and some aspects of specialist and complex care to around 600,000 people living in west Kent and East Sussex. We have a team of over 8,000 full and part-time staff. We also provide specialist cancer services to around 2 million people across Kent and East Sussex via the Kent Oncology Centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

You will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Degree in Cancer Nursing or related subject
  • SACT qualification and competence
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or willingness to work towards.
  • Teaching qualification and evidence of proficient teaching skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leading and developing staff,
  • Evidence of teaching nursing staff
  • Compassion, diplomacy and assertiveness,
  • Recognises and is confident in resolving conflict,
  • Able to think creatively and with innovation,
  • Effective nurse leader,
  • 5 years of experience in senior nursing post within cancer care as Band 6 or above, or equivalent,
  • Evidence of service development
Desirable criteria
  • Proven track record of managing change

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Track record of team building and good working relationships
  • Advance knowledge in cancer care and chemotherapy
  • Clinical competency for chemotherapy
  • Evidence of clinical skills such as care of CVADS, Venepuncture, Cannulation and administration of systemic anti-cancer drugs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable criteria
  • Developed teaching programmes for nurses with evidence based practice.
