Job overview

The Microbiology department at Maidstone Hospital have a  permanent post available for Specialist Biomedical Scientists (BMS band 6).

We are looking for candidates who  have IBMS Specialist Diploma  in Microbiology and  ideally at least three years post HCPC registration experience in a microbiology department .

The department has the following main pieces of equipment: Biomeriuex Blood culture analysers and Vitek 2, Bruker Maldi ToF, Enteric bio PCR for bacteria, viruses and some parasites, Perkin Elmer and Bruker Hain molecular equipment for CoVid, and TB PCR ,Roche 5800, BD Midget,  Abbott Architect and Biomerieux Vidas for serology. Telepath LIMS. but moving to Winpath in 2025.

Main duties of the job

All HCPC Registered staff will be expected to rotate through all sections of the department and join the on call rota following suitable competency assesment.

We pride ourselves on being a UKAS 15189:2022 accredited laboratory offering a high quality service to both hospitals and GPs. Specialties covered include : paediatrics, haemato oncology. opthalmology, general surgery and medicine, orthopaedics and sexual health.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • HCPC Registration
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio or appropriate equivalent
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working as a member of a team
  • Able to demonstrate working in bacteriology, serology and molecular microbiology setting
Desirable criteria
  • Working alone during an out of hours service
  • Able to train
  • Problem solving

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to interpret bacterial cultures
  • Ability to undertake technical validation of results
  • Command of written and spoken English
  • Basic use of Microsoft Word Excel
