Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pain Management

Job overview

The Integrated Pain Service is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our friendly and forward-thinking team.  We require you to have extensive post registration experience , including  recent clinical experience at Band 6  in an acute surgical or recovery/critical care setting, dealing with patients with PCA/epidural and local anaesthetic infusions.

You will be working autonomously and with the pain multidisciplinary team to provide specialist pain management for in-patients with acute and chronic pain.   

The post holder will assess patients with pain and develop, implement and evaluate appropriate holistic pain management plans, with supervision as required.

You will also provide leadership, alongside the lead nurse and CNS team for the chronic pain, outpatient, day unit (CPU).  CPU is a self-contained specialist unit comprising of a day ward, pain theatre, recovery area and outpatient clinic, based at Maidstone Hospital.

This post will require you to work across both hospital sites, Monday – Friday, excluding BH.

Main duties of the job

In partnership with members of the integrated pain service, the post holder will actively participate in the provision of pain management in both the inpatient and outpatient areas in the Trust.   They will ensure patients receive the highest standards of clinical care underpinned by evidenced based practice.  The role encompasses all aspects of acute and chronic pain.

The post holder will assess pain patients and develop, implement and evaluate appropriate holistic pain management plans, with supervision as required.

The post holder will contribute to the development of clinical practice and standards of care within the service including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.  They will identify, assist and lead where appropriate on areas of development within the service in collaboration with members of the integrated pain service. They will assist in the development and continuation of audit and research projects. The post holder will assist, develop and provide educational programmes and training for staff and patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with current valid NMC registration
  • First level degree in nursing
  • Mentorship course, or teaching and assessing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to work towards specialist Masters level education in pain management
  • Relevant post registration study, relevant specialist Pain management University module or EFIC module

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates extensive post registration clinical experience at Band 5
  • Clinical experience at band 6
  • Recent post registration experience in an acute surgical/recovery/critical care setting dealing with patients with PCA/epidural and local anaesthetic infusions
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge of pain as a speciality
  • Evidence of continued post registration training and education excluding mandatory training
  • Good understanding of the role of a Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Previous experience of formal and informal teaching of patients and staff
  • Knowledge of current issues, developments and recommendations within pain management
  • Knowledge of clinical audit, research, quality and standard setting
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of working as a part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Experience in chronic pain management
  • Experience of applying evidence-based research to clinical practice
  • Previous experience working in pain management
  • Previous experience of audit and evaluation
