NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST4 +)

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, high performing, twin site Trust in the role of chief registrar.

We are seeking two enthusiastic and motivated senior trainees (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust as a chief registrars.  The roles are open to trainees in any discipline supported by the Trust including surgery, Obstetrics and gynaecology, ACCS , Medicine and paediatrics. 

Although the chief registrar programme is hosted by the Royal College of Physicians, the posts are open to ant ST4 and above trainee in a specialty supported by the Trust, including surgical specialties.  This is an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills as well as continuing to train in the specialty, usually 50:50 clinical/managerial split in post.  The posts are open to those considering in programme or out of programme training and can be worked flexibly, the candidates will be expected to speak to their TPDs prior to application.

These 12 month posts will be based in the appropriate clinical Department within Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (one chief registrar at each site).

The chief registrar role will suit trainees who:

The chief registrar will be mentored by a senior clinical leader within the organisation and gain a unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.

The chief registrars will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP’s bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust provides acute hospital services for an area in South West Kent and parts of East Sussex.  The main acute hospitals are the Maidstone General Hospital, Maidstone and the newly redeveloped all single room, Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury.

The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience).  Approval of the relevant specialist advisory committee will be required.

In the first instance, applications must be discussed with your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD), and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD.

To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.

To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust’s strategic direction.

To participate fully in clinical governance of the specialty covering its Trust-wide activities. To attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trust’s Guide to Job Planning unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies.

To participate actively in departmental audits, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change

Qualification/ Training

  • Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes or appraisal

Quality / Service improvement or audit

  • Evidence of active involvement in quality improvement, audit, research or other activity that focuses on patient safety and clinical improvement and innovation

  • Evidence of a portfolio of audit / quality improvement projects, including evidence that the audit loop has been closed and evidence of learning about the principles of change management
  • Evidence of publications / presentations / prizes in quality improvement or audit  Good knowledge of the UK healthcare
