Job overview

MRI services at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust serve and support communities across the Kent region.  We are a team of over 6 x RDAs, 40 x Senior MRI Radiographers, 8 x Reporting MRI Radiographers and 3 x Superintendent MRI Radiographers across the East Kent Hospitals. Our hardworking and progressive MRI team work across four base sites including satellite sites.  This includes the newly formed Community Diagnostic Centre at Buckland, which supports the NHS England vision of reforming diagnostic services provided to the local community. As a large acute Trust, we provide key services within the patient pathway, working hard as a team to continually deliver efficient and patient-centered services. We are inviting applications from dynamic, experienced Senior MRI Radiographers to offer the position of Senior Radiographer to work in a diverse MRI Radiographers team at East Kent Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust

Main duties of the job

The MRI department at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundations Trust provides a wide range of high-quality imaging for the community and the wider population in East Kent. Our static MRI services based at The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital at Margate and CDC service at Buckland Hospital, Dover.  

A fleet of mobile MRI scanners operates across the main hospital sites and satellite sites including the Community Centre at Estuary View. The MRI service is continuing to develop and expand to support our community.

The department has state of the art imaging equipment with a highly skilled and motivated group of MRI Radiographers and Advanced Practitioners. We offer career progression within clinical and in to management roles within Radiology

Our satellite hospital sites in Buckland, Dover and Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone provide a variety of Outpatient, diagnostic and Minor Injury services, alongside a range of services throughout the local area.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior MRI Radiographer to work in a team of MRI Radiographers. 

Our service support open access from General Practice across East Kent catchment area, consultant referral form EKHUFT outpatient clinics, inpatient referrals from EKHUFT wards and Emergency departments, also support external referral for specialised imaging support for patients with MRI conditional implants

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be required to work in a team primarily within the based site with regular rotation between CDC sites across east Kent trust. The staff member is responsible for their own practice within Directorate/ Department protocol. In addition to that, expected to train and supervise junior members of staff, students and other trainees visiting the department.  Required to work without director supervision or support in out of hours service, required to work on a mobile / relocatable scanner as and when necessary.

The post holder required to perform a range of MRI procedures including complex clinical cases as required with in the MRI services, managing patient’s priority as appropriate. To contribute towards effective and responsive delivery of MRI services to patients and carry out a wide range of complex duties, acting on their own initiative, and using a wide range of professional, analytical and reasoning skills when judging a variety of complex clinical issues.

To assist in and manage workflow and ensure all data inputs are recorded for both patient record integrity and statistical evaluation purposes. To promote the highest professional and technical standards in the department using personal example.

Demonstrate partnership in professional development issues maintaining a high level of technical and theoretical skills through personal CPD. To participate in the Governance of the Department in areas including Risk Management, Health and Safety, Research and Audit activities.

·         Assisting Senior Radiographic staff in the organisation and function of day-to-day management in the radiological sciences.

 

·         To be a key member of the MRI team and work within the colleagues across MRI service

·         To supervise and support junior staff and promote maintenance of an efficient, effective and high-quality service for all users.

 

·         To manage and report as appropriate any equipment/power failure.

 

·         To actively promote and participate in clinical audit.

 

·         To undertake all MRI examinations as directed to an acceptable standard and seek guidance as appropriate. Aim to achieve and promote “quality” in all aspects of the Radiology service incorporating clinical tutorials.

 

·         To ensure the safety of self, staff and service users with regard to the use of ionising radiations in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and Local Rules of the non-Ionising Radiological Safety Committee. To produce high quality images which are accurately labelled and appropriate for the indicated pathology.

 

·         To ensure all patients entered inside the Magnetic environment

 

·         To ensure completion of all mandatory training and competency to use the required equipment. To take part in the appraisal process.

 

·         To participate, as required, in Directorate Role Development programmes, e.g. IV training.

 

·         To have responsibility for providing and maintaining a high-quality MRI service. To liaise with other staff groups and departments within the Trust as required.

 

  • To attend statuary training days and fulfil CPD commitment. To keep up to date with current imaging, professional and hospital issues.

 

·         To undertake all MRI examinations as directed by Consultant Radiologists and Superintendent Radiographers.

 

·         To develop expertise and practical competence within MRI, which may involve post graduate study.

 

·         To care for patient’s needs, attend to their welfare and ensure that you encourage and practice 'first time right' Radiography.  Strive to achieve and promote 'quality' in all aspects of the Radiography service incorporating clinical tutorials and appropriate meetings.

 

·         To be able to communicate information and instructions to patients and their relatives to undertake radiographic examinations effectively. Particularly where there are significant barriers to understanding, such as cognitive impairment or illness, hearing or sight impairment and those who are anxious or in pain.

 

·         To ensure safety of self, staff and patients/visitors with regard to the use of MRI scanning equipment and adhering to MHRA and local Operational guidelines.

 

·         To use all equipment in a safe and competent manner in accordance with good practice adhering to MHRA and local Operational Guidelines.

 

·         To report any operational problems, deal with room breakdowns and accidents, completing all relevant paperwork.

 

·         To adhere to and apply all relevant Health and Safety legislation and guidance.

 

·         To maintain strictest confidence when dealing with patients, staff and other Health Service business information in accordance with both Trust Policy and the Data Protection Legislation

 

·         To use and instruct others on the required functions of the computerised Radiology Patient Administration System and Radiology Information System i.e. PACS and RIS.

 

·         To actively participate in the education and training of all staff, including the Directorate Preceptor Programme for newly qualified staff.

Person specification

Basic academic qualification

Essential criteria
  • Bsc Radiography or Equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in Radiography or specialised area.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current Experience in MRI- 4 year or more in a busy MRI department.
  • Held a Senior MRI Radiographer post previously-4 years or more.
Desirable criteria
  • Recent Experience of operating a Philips 1.5T / 3T scanner- 2 year or more.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Leadership skills, any previous experience in Teaching or leading a team
  • Ability to motivate and encourage staff
Desirable criteria
  • Involved in service change programmes or initiated changes within Radiology

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge of Basic and advanced MRI physics
  • Up to date knowledge in MRI safety and practice
