Job overview

Join our thriving Older Adult Community Mental Health Services team! We're looking for a Psychiatrist to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health issues in adults over 65, including some younger adults with early-onset dementia. This position will provide Psychiatric care for older adults with mental health problems in a community setting. The role involves:

  • Assessment and Treatment: Conducting outpatient clinics, home visits, and residential/nursing home reviews.
  • Diagnosis: Contributing to the memory assessment service (working towards MSNAP accreditation) and seeing diagnostic cases.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) including nurses, social workers, and psychologists.
  • Expertise: Providing medical knowledge within the MDT and supporting colleagues.
  • On-call Rota: Participating in the West Kent On-call rota, requiring Section 12 approval for Mental Health Act (MHA) assessments.
  • Professional Development: Engaging in continuing professional development (CPD) and Trust mandatory training.

Team Function:

  • The OAMHS team receives around 1200 referrals annually for assessment and treatment.
  • The team uses a CAPA model for care planning.
  • The team has a rapid assessment service for urgent referrals.
  • All team members (except support workers) manage caseloads. Consultant psychiatrists handle complex cases and provide support/advice.
  • The team works collaboratively with primary care, social services, and other mental health services.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outpatient clinics (new & follow-up patients), some with dementia focus.
  • Perform planned and urgent community visits.
  • Conduct Mental Capacity Act (MCA) assessments and MHA assessments (if applicable).
  • Liaise with referrers, allied professionals, social services, carers, and support groups.
  • Contribute medical expertise to the MDT.
  • Support colleagues within the MDT.
  • Participate in maintaining MSNAP accreditation for the memory assessment service.
  • Participate in the West Kent On-call rota (Tier 2, requiring Section 12 approval).
  • Complete mandatory training and participate in CPD activities.
  • Participate in regular supervision and annual appraisals.
  • Participate in administrative/management duties within the CMHSOP.
  • Adhere to Trust policies and procedures, following best practices outlined by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and General Medical Council.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych OR a specialist qualification from an EU country that complies with EU directive 2005/36/EU.

ELIGIBILITY

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Approved under S12(2) OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

TRANSPORT

Essential criteria
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative

CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • At least 4 years postgraduate experience, including at least 2 years in core psychiatry training programme
  • Good knowledge in specialty
  • Good clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate experience in specialty
