Job overview

Ward 2  Acute Frailty Unit is based in Tunbridge wells Hospital  and  consists of 26 short stay beds where elderly male and female patients undergo a holistic assessment of their acute medical and often complex needs.

The Unit also has a 8 spaced assessment area where patients are welcomed and then assessed to identify the most appropriate care plan. We work collaboratively with a range of specialties to facilitate clinical excellence and holistic care delivery with a multi-disciplinary approach.

Ward 2  has excellent medical cover, a designated Frailty Consultant, a dedicated therapy team  and a  Discharge Co-coordinator. All members of the team work together to ensure that top quality medical care is delivered and to facilitate effective discharge planning. The team also includes  a Lead Frailty Nurse who works cross-site to help Patient flow in the Frailty Unit.

Main duties of the job

This post requires a motivational and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about Frailty Care. This post also requires an individual who is able to manage patient flow effectively on the busy Frailty Unit. You must be flexible, approachable, motivated, and hardworking and be able to use your own initiative, whilst also having the ability to work under pressure and to work alongside staff in the Emergency Department and Ward 22 to ensure the Frailty Pathway for our Patients is smooth and effective.

You will have the opportunity to  to develop Management skills in this role, as you support junior nursing staff, while working alongside the Ward Manager to help develop the Team.

You will receive a comprehensive preceptorship program and will be encouraged in further development. We offer a supportive, exciting and challenging work environment and we are committed to the training and development of our staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions. 

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level registered nurse
  • Immediate Life Support provider
  • Evidence of further education since qualification e.g. degree
  • Mentorship/Preceptorship course (or equivalent)
  • Cannulation skills
Desirable criteria
  • Management/ Leadership course or a willingess to undertake

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience at band 5 in administering specialist medical infusions.
  • Proficient clinician and a clinical role model
  • Good understanding of current issues in nursing and the NHS
  • Demonstrates a commitment to professional development
  • Demonstrates excellent understanding of cancer treatments and their side effects / complications
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience in audit and benchmarking processes
  • Awareness of PICC service
