We are looking to a recruit a specialty doctor to join our comprehensive Respiratory service at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The post will enable the successful applicant to gain valuable experience in a number of clinical areas including:
- Acute respiratory inpatient work
- Outpatient clinics
- Respiratory diagnostics including bronchoscopy and the potential to observe EBUS
- Respiratory interventions such as chest drain insertion under ultrasound, pleurodesis etc.
The successful candidate will work on the middle grade rota with a 1:13 shift-working pattern.

Main duties of the job
Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust seeks to appoint a specialty doctor in
General Internal Medicine and Respiratory to work within our Adult Medicine department. The post
holder will be based at Tameside General Hospital. The post is based within the Respiratory
Department and the main activity undertaken will include outpatient clinics, diagnostic tests and ward
rounds and on calls for general internal medicine.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Respiratory department has a range of facilities:
- Respiratory ward (30 beds) including NIV, nasal hi flow, ITU step downs
· Outpatient clinics
· Bronchoscopy
· EBUS at Manchester University Foundation NHS Trust
· Lung cancer MDT
· Pulse oximetry and sleep studies
There are 4 respiratory consultants who work within the department:
· Dr M Abdelaziz- Consultant Chest Physician and Lead for Adult Medicine
· Dr P Bhatia – Consultant Chest Physician
· Dr C Payne - Consultant Chest Physician
· Dr J Majumdar – Consultant in Acute Medicine and Respiratory Medicine
Adult Medicine Department
The Respiratory department is part of Adult Medicine, which is within the Medicine and Clinical Support
Services Division. The Division also includes Urgent Care including Accident and Emergency department.
The Division of Adult Medicine admits and provides care for routine and emergency medicine and outpatients.
The successful candidate is anticipated to take part of the general medical on call rota which is currently with appropriate remuneration.
Key duties of the post
The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultants working across the
Respiratory Department.
The post holder will support the Respiratory department:
a) To participate in various outpatient activities including the medical management of patients attending
outpatient clinics.
b) Ensuring the effective organisation of the ward including diagnosis and treatment of all patients
admitted.
c) The appropriate discharge of patients, including providing timely paperwork to the General
Practitioner ensuring a continuation of care following discharge.
d) The direct clinical supervision and training of the Ward Junior Medical Staff as well as the organisation
and delegation of clinical work.
e) The monitoring of the quality of service given by the Respiratory which will include clinical audits.
f) Active participation at various committees and working groups.
g) Participation in development of medical treatment protocols.
h) Professional supervision under consultant guidance aiming to encourage the development of all
doctors within the division.
i) Contributing to the provision of reports for the Coroner, police statements and for complaints
management adhering to time frames.
j) Demonstrating an involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit.
k) Contributing to collaborating with clinical colleagues.
l) Ensuring own practice is up to date. This will include taking responsibility for own clinical professional development and participation in the Trust wide appraisal system.
m) Complying with data protection.
n) Complying with all relevant Trust policies and procedures.
o) To undertake regular on call duties for general medical on call rota.
Job Plan
Hours of duty are the equivalent of 10 Programmed Activities per week plus on-call allowance.
Clinical sessions to be based in outpatients or in admitted areas as required
Training
Support will be given to gain competency in bronchoscopy and EBUS
Our Postgraduate Medical Centre has a very full and comprehensive medical programme, which the
post holder is encouraged to participate.
The Trust fully supports continuing professional development as recommended by the Royal College
of Physicians.
Candidates will be supported to pursue specialist registration in the speciality of respiratory via the
CESR route.
Conditions of Service
This post is covered by the terms and conditions of service of the Trust, which currently follow those
laid down by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) Terms and Conditions of Service and General Medical Council.
The post is whole-time and currently works on the full shift rota with prospective cover.
Under the Junior Doctors’ Hours Initiative new hours/rota commitments may come into force during
your contractual period. The Trust reserves the right to implement these as required. As part of your
duties you will be required to comply with and co-operate in the provision of monitoring information.
Any extra duty worked over and above contracted hours should be taken as time off in lieu.
Conditions of Appointment
The doctor must be fully registered with the General Medical Council.

Qualifactions and experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Specialty trainee competencies to the level of an CT2/ ST3 Acute Medicine (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Previous significant experience in respiratory and general medicine.
