We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, committed Radiographer to join our Cross-sectional team, at a Trust rated as Good by the CQC.

You must be patient focused and motivated to deliver an exemplary service. This is a great chance to join our forward thinking and committed team in providing a high quality service to our local community.

You will be expected to work as part of a team within the Cross-sectional imaging department and be committed to supporting the CT on-call. There will also be an expectation that you will contribute to providing an extended working day service within CT and MR where necessary, provided that you have the relevant skills and experience. 

Whilst previous experience in CT or MR is desirable, we will provide full training in both modalities for the right candidate. There is a fair rotation of staff through both CT and MR.

We currently have 4 CT scanners, 3 Canon and 1 Siemens. We also have  2 MR Scanners, a GE 450W and a Canon Vantage Orian.

There is a cohesive Cross-sectional leadership team consisting of the Cross-sectional lead and 4 deputy leads.

We have 8 Advanced Practitioners in the Cross-sectional department, covering a variety of reporting, including; CT Colonography, CT Brain, MRI Knee, MRI spine and MRI Brain.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for carrying out cross-sectional radiographic examinations and producing  high quality images in a professional and caring manner.

To assist in the management and coordination of the Radiology service, ensuring it is delivered safely and effectively.

Participate in a 24/7 service provision. There is a commitment to the current out of hours service and working patterns.

Contribute to departmental governance, quality and audit.
 
Provide a safe and clean working environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

SECTION 1- MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROFESSIONAL / CLINICAL:

  • To effectively communicate with all patients, their careers and the wider multi-disciplinary team in order to ensure a timely, patient centered service.

  • To be proactively involved in the daily organisation of work lists to ensure safe effective service is maintained and clinical priorities are met.

  • To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patient or departmental needs.

  • To carry out duties in a professional manner to national, trust and departmental standards.

  • To carry out intravenous cannulations and injections of contrast media as required by the department after being given the appropriate training and demonstrating competency.

  • To carry our rectal cannulation during a CT Colonography procedure as required by the department after being given the appropriate training and demonstrating competency.

  • Assist the Radiologists with interventional examinations ensuring a sterile environment is maintained and consumables are available.
  • Keep equipment, work areas and accessories clean and tidy. Be aware of all procedures to promote infection control and reduce cross contamination

  • Advise patients regarding enquiries concerning their referral and the nature of the examination to be undertaken. Communicate effectively with patients who are anxious regarding the claustrophobic nature of CT and MR.

  • Maintain accuracy of clinical records by RIS management systems.

  • Liaise with the Radiology booking to ensure any appointment delays are minimized

  • To participate in the evaluation and development of new imaging techniques.

    Managerial:
  • To ensure that all equipment is well cared for, reporting breakdowns, faults or problems.
  • To ensure that all incidents, accidents and near-misses are reported to the line manager and via the Trust reporting system.
  • To assist in the training of junior members of staff, and students.
  • Conduct personal development reviews with members of staff as required.
  • To undertake risk assessments as required.
  • To co-ordinate and manage the workload within your area of practice.
  • Initiate and co-ordinate audit projects
  • Assist in the induction of new starters ensuring that the required equipment training is carried out with documented evidence.

SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 

Risk Management (Health and Safety):

  • You should follow risk management procedures at all times. The Risk Management procedures for the Trust and the department are kept by the departmental manager. You are personally responsible for risk management issues in respect of yourself, your colleagues and patients.
    • If you identify a potential hazard you should report it to your manager/supervisor at once. If in doubt you should speak to your manager for guidance.
  • You must always use safety equipment provided and report any defects to your managers.
  • Be aware of the dangers and effects of high field MR and ionizing radiation.
  • Be familiar with the safety procedures especially concerning MR including magnet quenching, fire and cardiac arrest.
  • Use detailed knowledge of MR safety issues and the hazards involved to ensure that all persons entering the MR scan room have completed a safety questionnaire and removed all personal belongings which might be hazardous to or damaged by the strong magnetic field.
  • Advise clinicians on the suitability of patients for MR scans with particular reference to patients with communication difficulties, internal cardiac/neurological devices and external mechanical devices.
  • Be responsible for the appropriate use of MR surface coils ensuring patient safety is not compromised.

Clinical Governance

  • To ensure clinical effectiveness by maintaining own CPD of current radiographic practice.
  • To take part in the rotation between CT and MR to ensure that after the induction period, skills and knowledge are maintained.
  • Observe the Data Protection Act
  • Maintain quality standards, policies and procedures adopted within the Directorate
  • To be actively involved with quality projects within the department and support the audit programme on a regular basis.

Education and development

  • Maintain commitment to CPD, keeping up to date with latest developments as required
  • Participate in training, supervision and assessment of both student and junior radiographers
  • Participate in the PDR program and ensure all mandatory training is up to date including the local rules and directorate IRMER protocols.

SECTION 3- EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

Infection Prevention and Control:

  • You are personally responsible for ensuring that you protect yourself, patients, visitors and colleagues from the risks of infection associated with health care activities and the care environment.
  • You must adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times liaising with the infection control team and acting on any instructions given.
  • You must attend regular infection prevention and control update training.
  • You should at all times promote and demonstrate good practice for the prevention and control of infection.
  • To avoid any behavior which discriminates against your fellow employees, or potential employees on the grounds of their sex, sexual orientation, marital status, race, religion creed, colour, nationality, ethnic origin or disability.

Person specification

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or DCR (R)
  • State Registration with the Health Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate qualification in CT and or MR.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate experience in radiography
  • Specialist professional knowledge-experience in CT or MR
  • Ability to demonstrate a good understanding of the principles of CT/MR
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary team working
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Experience in the supervision of less experienced radiographers and students
