Bank Medical Laboratory Assistant

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant the post holder will assist the biomedical scientists in providing a quality medical laboratory service preparing and processing clinical specimens of blood, urine, faeces and other body tissues. Dealing with reception and telephone queries from staff, GPs and other users of the Pathology Service. 

Main duties of the job

To check specimen and request details to ensure samples received in the department are correct and fully labelled before processing.

 To book in samples using the laboratory computer system. 

 To manually prepare samples for processing, using laboratory equipment where required. 

 To prepare and package specimens for referral to other laboratories. 

 To attend anticoagulant clinic and perform non-complex blood tests. 

To dispose of specimens in accordance with laboratory procedure. 

 To Inform BMS of urgent requests. 

 To ensure all equipment is maintained and work areas are kept clean and tidy.  
 To maintain records and logs used within the department. 
 To provide accurate data entry of patient identification  into the  database. 

To  advise the section supervisor when stocks of reagents and consumables are approaching minimum stock levels.  

To assist in the reporting of clinical incidents. 

 To communicate results verbally or by telephone to persons authorised to receive them. 
 To provide information  regarding samples & sample handling including information on appropriate tests and collection conditions. 
 To liaise with wards and GP Surgeries to clarify any discrepancies between specimens and requests.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To check specimen and request details to ensure samples received in the department are correct and fully labelled before processing.

 To book in samples using the laboratory computer system. 

 To manually prepare samples for processing, using laboratory equipment where required e.g. centrifuges, Beckman Coulter Auto-mate. 

 To prepare and package specimens for referral to other laboratories. 

  To order transport for departments to deliver or collect specimens to and from other hospitals. 

 To attend the anticoagulant clinic and collect and perform non-complex blood tests. 

To dispose of specimens in accordance with the laboratory procedure. 

 To Inform Biomedical Scientist of urgent requests. 

 To ensure all equipment is maintained and work areas are kept clean and tidy.  To carry out corrective action and inform the Advanced (Senior) Biomedical Scientist in Blood Science of any event which may cause a service delivery failure. 
 To maintain records and logs used within the department. 
 To provide accurate data entry of patient identification details into the computer / database systems. 

To use departmental resources efficiently and advise the section supervisor when stocks of reagents and consumables are approaching minimum stock levels.  

To attend meetings as appropriate.  

To assist in the reporting of clinical incidents. 

To assist in audit as required. 

 To communicate results verbally or by telephone to persons authorised to receive them. 
 To provide advice and information to Laboratory, Ward, GP staff and patients regarding samples & sample handling including information on appropriate tests and collection conditions for in house, referred & infrequently requested tests. 
 To liaise with wards and GP Surgeries to clarify any discrepancies between specimens and requests.  

To be trained in the Departmental Quality System.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general educational standard
  • Math and English GCSE or equivalent level
Desirable criteria
  • Science GCSE or equivalent level

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Laboratory experience either NHS or Industry/Education
  • Experience working in the Health Service or Health Care Service

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Good interpersonal skills when dealing with patients or general public
  • Computer literate (keyboard skills etc.)
  • Must be able to work as part of a team
  • Ability to follow specific instructions and procedures
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good written and communication skills
