Assistant Practitioner

Band 4 - Permanent 37.5 hours 

Applications are invited from candidates with the relevant experience  to join the department as an assistant practitioner to perform some standard diagnostic biochemical tests after appropriate training. The post holder will also be expected to participate in the training of medical laboratory assistants and other staff within the Trust where appropriate. 

Tameside General Hospital is situated eight miles to the east of Manchester and serves a population of approximately 250,000. The hospital is situated for both easy access to both central Manchester and the Peak District.

We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic and suitably qualified individual to join our small but friendly team. We are a fully computerised laboratory  with electronic links to the wards and local GPs. The Blood Sciences Department is well equipped with 2 x Beckman DxH 800 (Haematology), 2 x Werfen ACL TOP 350, 2 x Ortho Vision (Transfusion), 1 x Beckman Automate (pre-analytics), 2 x Beckman AU5800 (Biochemistry), 2 x Beckman DxI 800 (Immunoassay), 1 x Beckman DxI 900 (Immunoassay), Tosoh G11 (HbA1c/ HbV) and Sebia Hydrasys (Electrophoresis).

We are UKAS accredited and a HCPC accredited training laboratory.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To assist in any research and development activities as required.
  • The post holder will be expected to perform some standard diagnostic biochemical tests after appropriate training.
  • To perform work in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures and Protocols in order to facilitate the provision of accurate and timely results.
  • To attend meetings as appropriate.
  • To participate in training of the Medical Laboratory Assistants and other staff where deemed appropriate by Advanced (Senior) Biomedical Scientist and/or Department Manager.
  • To plan and organise their own work.
  • To ensure all equipment and work areas are kept clean and tidy.
  • To assist in monitoring and dealing with outstanding work.
  • To carry out corrective action and inform the Advanced (Senior) Biomedical Scientist in Blood Sciences of any event which may cause a service delivery failure.
  • To perform some point of care testing if required, when competent and following training.
  • To communicate results verbally or by telephone to persons authorised to receive them in a clear and concise manner following appropriate policies and procedures.
  • To provide advice and information to Laboratory, Ward, GP staff and patients regarding samples & sample handling including information on appropriate tests and collection conditions for in house, referred & infrequently requested tests.
  • To communicate any relevant information to laboratory colleagues within the section and to inform effectively at hand over.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·        To ensure that the local and national policies for safe, secure and                         confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory                       information are implemented.

·        To use the Pathology Computer System (WinPath Clinisys) according to the         authorised protocols.

·        To enter their own results and those obtained by others into WinPath                     Clinisys.

·        Check and correct if necessary, information input by other laboratory staff.

·        To maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases.

·        To use Trust wide I.T. systems as appropriate following trust policies,                     guidelines and procedures.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 3 GCSEs grade A-C (including Maths & English) or equivalent qualifications or experience.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience in the NHS.
  • Level 4 Qualification e.g. NVQ, HNC, BTEC, Foundation level degree or equivalent experience in the NHS.
Desirable criteria
  • IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part II)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • experience working in a Pathology Specimen Reception Department
  • Knowledge of laboratory information and management computer systems and standard IT Microsoft packages e.g. word processing and spread sheets
  • Exhibit competency to work alone

  • NHS Experience
  • Scientific Background
