Principal Clinical Scientist (Biochemistry)

This is a newly created post and applications are invited for a band 8a Principal Clinical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry to join our team of Clinical Biochemists within Blood Sciences at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. 

The successful candidate will participate in the delivery of a comprehensive, high quality Clinical Biochemistry laboratory service to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and Primary Care within Blackburn with Darwen and East Lancashire. 

The Clinical Biochemistry department is mainly situated at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital with a smaller laboratory at Burnley General Teaching Hospital. We provide a laboratory service to 2 acute hospitals, 3 community hospitals and for Primary Care across Blackburn with Darwen and East Lancashire covering a patient population of around 560,000. 

The successful applicant should be HCPC registered and have already completed FRCPath Part 1 in Clinical Biochemistry.  Full support will be provided for the completion of full FRCPath.

The successful candidate will join our existing friendly team at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust comprising two Consultant Clinical Scientists and one STP trainee. 

You will participate in the Duty Biochemist rota providing clinical advice and clinical authorisation of results. You will be expected to develop an area of specialist knowledge and as this is a new post,  it is an excellent opportunity for development. 

In addition, you will contribute to service development, audit and training relevant to the Clinical Biochemistry service.  There will also be opportunities to be involved in network service developments.

The laboratory at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital has a full automated track solution and all Primary Care samples are transported there for analysis.  There is a smaller laboratory at the Burnley General Hospital to analyse hospital requests only.

The Principal Clinical Scientist (Biochemistry) participates in the delivery of a comprehensive high quality Clinical Biochemistry laboratory service to the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and the general practices within Blackburn with Darwen and East Lancashire. This includes the provision of a clinical advisory and clinical diagnostic service and specialist expertise in the field of Clinical Biochemistry. 

They will work with the Consultant Clinical Biochemists to ensure the quality of the analytical service is maintained to nationally accepted standards. 

The Principal Clinical Biochemist works with the Consultant Clinical Biochemists on the selection of analytical methods and equipment, ensures their correct use and provides advice to clinicians and other relevant health care staff on the appropriateness of diagnostic investigations, their interpretation and patient management.

MAIN DUTIES

 

1.     To deliver on their own responsibility a broad range of highly complex, specialised and non-routine scientific work requiring skilled performance applied to a variety of situations, with or without scientific and/or technical support.

2.      Will assist the Head of Department and Consultant Clinical Biochemist and liaise with the laboratory manager to provide a comprehensive and high quality Clinical Biochemistry service to nationally accepted standards across all sites served by the laboratory.  

3.      Will provide clinical and scientific advice to clinicians regarding biochemical investigations and their interpretatio

4.      Will develop a specialist interest in an area of clinical biochemistry or Point of Care Testing and will lead on service development and research in those areas, working with the Head of Department and Consultant Clinical Biochemist.

5.   The post holder will contribute to the teaching programmes of the department and across sites.
