Clinical Supervisor for RPE FFP3 mask fit testing, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering a safe and effective service for the protection and safeguarding of staff from potential harm. They will be carrying out the vital task of fitting and testing masks to ensure an adequate seal is provided to protect from airborne transmission of the virus. 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will undertake a clinical supervisory role overseeing a team of fit testers, with mask fit testing both disposable and reusable  RPE.

In particular, the post holder will be responsible for:

  • Delivery of a safe RPE FFP3 mask fit testing service, assisting to influence and facilitate change within the setting and service areas
  • The supervision of clinical assessment prior to and during fit testing.
  • Supporting ELHT staff to deliver Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP) for patents safely whilst keeping themselves free from harm and offering specialist advice as needed
  • The supervision of setting up equipment and preparation of staff for fit testing ensuring masks are donned correctly, making a difference to staff safety.
  • The supervision of the Qualitative and Quantitative fit testing methods and various stations within the testing environment so delivering safely quality results
  • The clinical supervision of safe fit testing and completion of documentation of staff being fit tested.
  • Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based policies and procedures
  • With supervision become involved with trials and reviews of new FFP3 masks and support others within the team with trials
  • Staff will be required to Fit Test around different areas of the Trust, this could include wards, estate buildings, and meeting rooms. They will be required to cover different time zones including twilight shifts to support night staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Role Specific 

  • Undertake a clinical supervisory role, overseeing several non-clinical fit testers, Band 3 administrative post, delivering a safe fit testing service, assisting to influence and facilitate change within the setting and service areas
  • Assist with the overall coordination of the fit testing environment and day to day delivery of the fit testing, ensuring the room and equipment are prepared and sufficient stock of testing supplies are available
  • Ensure the environment is clean, tidy, free from clutter, all equipment for both Qualitative and Quantitative fit testing methods is set up correctly, checked and in good working order.
  • Supervise the fit testing stations and correct mask fitting to confirm the correct FFP3 mask for the staff member. Provide specialist advice on the use of RPE in clinical practice. Address any concerns that may arise regarding RPE and AGPs.
  • Supervise those staff to be fit tested ensuring clean shaven faces (8-12hrs) and only water taken orally 30 mins pre-tests and appropriate time elapses between tests as per SOP
  • Supervise and coordinate the fit testing preparation of FFP3 masks and donning of masks correctly.
  • Supervise fit checks to ensure staff members understand the importance of undertaking a fit check each time the FFP3 mask is worn.
  • Ensure staff understand the importance of other PPE to be worn when wearing an FFP3 mask and know the correct method to don and doff safely.
  • Under the supervision of ELHT Fit Test Lead, undertake and support the procurement team with trials and evaluations of different makes and models of masks being introduced for use within ELHT
  • Supervise and generally oversee the non-clinical fit testers and the National Fit Test Team with FFP3 mask trials and evaluations.
  • Collate information from the evaluations and communicate issues with the ELHTs Fit Test Clinical Lead
  • Ensure manufactures instruction are followed for donning new masks, instruct, demonstrate and supervise the non-clinical fit testers with the use of new masks.
  • Supervise the National Fit Test Team and the non-clinical fit testers in the process of fit testing FFP3 mask as necessary to safeguard the wellbeing of ELHT staff.
  • Ensure the fit test team check and maintain equipment in good, safe working order and items are cleaned disinfected between individuals as per policy.
  • Oversee the use of PPE and hand hygiene of the fit testers during the process and within the fit testing environment
  • Supervise the configuration of the fit testing area (layout, equipment, PPE, consumables, mask stocks, sanitisation stations and waste materials). At the end of the session must ensure all equipment for both Qualitative and Quantitative fit testing methods is cleaned, disinfected and dried as per policy, stored appropriately and safely secured. This will include the Fit Test Team lap top.
  • Oversee bear below the elbows of staff attending for fit testing and adherence to the FFP3 fit testing standard operating procedure.

Full training will be given to the successful applicants on appointment.

A variety of hours are available with a requirement to cover a 7 day service, Monday to Friday 08:00-20:00; Saturday and Sunday 08:00-14:00 across all hospital sites.

Qualifications,

Essential criteria
  • Registered Health Care Professional e.g NMC for nurses, GPhC for pharmacists, HCPC for allied health care professionals.
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area
  • Current RPE FFP3 mask fit test training / update or willingness to undertake
  • Further training or experience in a clinical supervisory position
