Job overview

A unique opportunity for a registered Children's nurse to work on the Children's observation and assessment unit.

Children's observation and assessment unit ( COAU ) is a 11 beds/11 waiting seats offering a 24 hour service seeing on average 40 children in a 24 hour period hence has a fast turnover of children staying on average 4 hours to which they are either admitted to the ward or discharged home.

Children are referred in from GP surgeries, Emergency Dept, NWAS or other health care professionals and our open access children and young people.

This role requires a caring professional approach. Working within a fast flowing extremely busy unit requires someone who communicates well, is a team player and who can face challenging situations on a day to day basis with a calm but effective response.

You will be required to work Long days, midnights and nights, covering  weekends and bank holidays and be flexible towards the needs of the service. Therefore you may be required at times to work within family care.

Main duties of the job

Staff Nurse - Children's Observation and Assessment Unit 

General duties will include assessment of children on arrival using PEWS and having experience of recognizing the sick child.

Planning along with medical staff care required, carrying out that plan of and care and assessing its effectiveness.

This includes specimen taking urine, bloods etc..

Administration of prescribed medication

Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team.

Use of IT systems

Child friendly family centered approach

Paediatric advanced life support

General care of the unit, cleaning stocking up etc.…..

Involvement in audit

Participate in mandatory training

You may also be required to adopt a link nurse role

You will be required to work nights weekends and bank holidays and be flexible towards the needs of the service. Therefore you may be required at times to work on the children’s ward if needed.

Job Description/Specification


The post holder will act as a role model for junior team members in the delivery of a high standard of specialist nursing care. They will provide evidence based care to children and their families, providing education and support as required. The post holder will play a key role in the development and supervision of junior members of staff and ensure the efficient running of the unit in the absence of a sister or ward manager.


Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical

1. Work as a member of the team providing specialist nursing care to children and their families. Ensure that the child’s care is assessed, planned,
implemented and evaluated utilizing a family centered approach. Be
responsible for reviewing and updating nursing care plans and documentation and provide support to other staff.
2. Responsible for multidisciplinary discharge planning appropriate to the
individual child’s needs.
3. Responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in their speciality,
take appropriate action and lead others to do so.
4. Ensure safe use of therapeutic and diagnostic equipment. e.g. Safely set up
and maintain intra venous (IV) pumps and supervise Junior staff.
5. Ensure safe administration of all medications (including IV) ensuring accurate drug calculations, in accordance with the NMC Guidelines, Directorate and
Trust policies.
6. Maintain legible, accurate records and ensure the safety and confidentiality of such records.
7. Ensure when exposed to body fluids, that the adequate precautions are taken to minimise the risk of cross infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids including blood products.
Managerial
8. Act as a professional in ensuring a duty of care to children, their families and
other staff. Particularly in relation to patient safety, storage of their belongings,
equipment and safety of their colleagues.
9. Participate in the orientation, assessment, development and training of
students and mentoring for new members of staff.
10. Understand and participate in process or ordering supplies, within the agreed budget.
Communication
11. Ensure that effective communication is established with all disciplines,
patients and relatives. Communicate sensitive and distressing information to patients and their families e.g. when children are seriously ill, child protection issues.
12.Participate in multidisciplinary child protection case conferences as required.
13. Assess and advise patients and relatives in distressing situations and ensure that their needs are met by the whole team. Enable and support colleagues in developing effective communication skills.
14.Ensure effective communication in demanding and challenging situations, supporting colleagues.
15.Participate in team meetings to share ideas and exchange information.
Education and Development
16. Ensure continued effective registration with the NMC and observe the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. Maintain an up to date professional portfolio, recording experiences towards re-validation 3 yearly.
17.Take personal responsibility for own professional growth and keep up to date with professional development and research.
18.Responsible for a topic/area of specialist interest, related to speciality or
service development and contribute to developments in that area, including
training and development of colleagues.
19.Participate in annual personal development review and develop a personal development programme.
Research and Clinical Audit
20.Regularly undertake clinical audit to contribute to practice development and quality improvements.
21.Ensure practice is based on current advances in research.
22.Regularly gain feedback from users, to inform developments in the service.
Health and Safety
23.To attend annual updates in all mandatory areas e.g. child protection, Fire,
Moving and Handling, Infection Control and Resuscitation.
24.To participate and undertake risk assessments on the ward/unit.
25.Adhere to all Trust Health and Safety policies.

Risk Management

It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff of the Trust that they fulfill a proactive role towards the management of risk in all their actions. You will be required to undertake an annual personal development review (PDR) which will give you the opportunity to discuss with your manager your progress in relation to your job outline.
Once progression has been agreed you will normally progress to the next
incremental point on the pay band 12 months after appointment to this post and to
subsequent points every 12 months thereafter, subject to meeting the criteria for progression when you pass through the second gateway point.

Ensure that personal actions and conduct comply with the Trust Policies and Procedures e.g. Health and Safety, Tobacco Control Policy, Equal Opportunities, Confidentiality, The Data Protection Act (1998), Moving and Handling Regulations.
Attend training courses as required e.g. induction, moving and handling, fire lectures.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RNC
  • 12 months experience working in an acute hospital setting
  • Basic Life Support & willing to work towards Paediatric Life Support
  • IT skills
  • Keen to undertake further training particularly relating to care of a sick child
