Job overview
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to recruit a locum Consultant Histopathologist on a full time (10 PA) basis, to cover long term sickness although applications from part-time applicants would be considered. The successful candidate will join a team of 12 Consultant Pathologists in a modern Cellular Pathology Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
Main duties of the job
Applicants are expected to be experienced in all aspects of histopathology and non-gynae cytology and there are opportunities to develop special interests
Applicants are required to posses the FRCPath (or equivalent qualification) and have CCT or be within 6 months of obtaining this.

ELHT is a major referral centre for HPB, Head & Neck and Urology Cancer Services and we also receive cancer resections from Colorectal, Breast and Gynae Units. We are a national screening unit for Bowel cancer screening patients. The Department is recognised for 4 Cellular pathology STs and in addition supported by 2 Senior Clinical Fellows.
Applicants are expected to be experienced in all aspects of histopathology and non-gynae cytology and there are opportunities to develop special interests although experience in breast, urology, colorectal and skin pathology would be more beneficial to the post.
Our Hospital is situated close to the motorway networks and at close proximity to beautiful countryside of Ribble Valley and the Lake District and is 40 minutes away from Manchester.
The Department of Cellular Pathology is UKAS accredited.

ATTAINMENTS
Essential criteria
- Educational Qualifications - Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- Professional/Occupational Qualifications - Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Professional/Occupational Qualifications - Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- Professional/Occupational Qualifications - FRCPath or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
- Educational Qualifications - A higher qualification e.g. M.D. Msc or Phd
TRAINING
Essential criteria
- Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
Desirable criteria
- Experience in breast, urology, lower GI, head&neck non-gynae cytology & skin (including inflammatory) pathology
- Specialist experience in one or more areas of practice to take a lead role in that area
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Practical - Management of wide range of Histopathology and non-gynae Cytology
- Teaching - Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust
- Audit - Understanding and experience of performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training
- Research - Awareness of basic research methods
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship
- Previous research projects/publications
CONTINUING PROF DEVELOPMENT
Essential criteria
- Clear commitment to lifelong learning
- Experience of evidence based medicine
- Ability to keep up to date in the speciality
Desirable criteria
- Membership of appropriate post-graduate societies.
- IT skills
MANAGEMENT
Essential criteria
- Understanding of current NHS management systems including clinical governance and risk management.
- Attendance at management meetings

Essential criteria
- Communication and Relationships - Ability to communicate with colleagues and users of the service including patients and their relatives.

CIRCUMSTANCES
Essential criteria
- Agree to live within 30 minutes travel time of the Trust unless permitted otherwise
- Immunised against Hepatitis B
