Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Breast Radiology Specialist Grade doctor to join our friendly Radiology Team at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.  Bolton has recently been voted the best place to work in Greater Manchester in the national staff survey and we are proud of our fantastic team of staff.

Due to the increasing workload in our Bolton Breast Unit, we are looking to expand our clinical team and grow our services. The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Applicants must have: full registration with the GMC and a license to practice; and have completed a minimum of 12 years medical work since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years in Breast subspecialty.

Main duties of the job

The Radiology team work as part of the Greater Manchester Imaging Network with both Consultant and Radiographer, clinical and operational representation in strategic groups. We work closely with other North West Sector organisations to develop opportunities for collaborative working to support clinically efficient, sustainable services and standardised care across the sector and Greater Manchester.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Breast Radiology Specialist Grade doctor on a full or part time basis, If you have other special interests and you would like to join our team at Bolton we will welcome any suitable applicants. Posts are offered at 10 PAs 

Benefits include flexible working and sessions of home working in line with service need. There will be a commitment to the 7-day working rota, with some on-call sessions. Overnight emergency work is currently outsourced to an external agency.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC, FRCR (or equivalent) Part 1 working towards achieving Part 2.

Bolton is a specialist maternity and paediatric centre for Greater Manchester.

The Royal Bolton Hospital has a busy Emergency Department and the provision of first class emergency care will continue to be a Trust priority. A dedicated children’s Emergency department has been built to run alongside the main adult service. In addition to maternity and children’s services, we run screening and symptomatic breast services, orthopaedics, cardiology and ophthalmology and bowel screening services.  There are formal links with the University of Manchester School Of Medicine and students from all clinical years receive training in the Trust. Bolton’s own Institute of Medical Sciences in due to open  in 2024.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated Specialist Grade doctor to join our team of Consultant Radiologists, Breast Advanced Practitioners and Consultant Mammographer.

A Specialist Grade doctor will work autonomously to a level of defined competencies set out by mutual agreement, providing direct clinical care and meeting service delivery and improvement requirements.

Bolton Breast Unit is located in the main hospital and is equipped with Mammography, Tomosynthesis, ultrasound and all relevant breast interventions including 7G VAE. We are in the process of setting up Contrast Enhanced Mammography.

The unit is providing one stop/new patient clinics for new referrals, assessments from the National Breast Screening Service and follow-up clinics. Bolton Breast Screening unit covers Bolton, Rochdale and Bury.

The Breast radiology commitment will include screening film reading, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and CT work. Other subspecialty interests will be accommodated within the job plan. A full-time contract will include 2 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Supporting Professional Activities and 1 PA for 7 day working (1 in 16 joining the Registrar on-call rota).
