We are looking to appoint a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist to join a fantastic multi-professional team at East Lancashire NHS Trust,  where your skills, knowledge and experience will be critical to the provision of high quality services.   

You will join a well established team of 28 consultants who are dedicated to providing the highest standards of obstetric and gynaecological care while also being a pillar of clinical and educational support for junior doctors and trainees.   

The applicant should have the appropriate training and experience to fulfil the requirements of this post and be on the Specialist Register or entry expected within 6 months of interview date.

 This appointment offers exciting opportunities in light of the major changes currently taking place in the Obstetric and Gynaecology Directorates within the Trust.   

 

 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide and develop further, with Clinical Colleagues, Obstetric and Gynaecological services for the Trust and to collaborate with colleagues in all disciplines including primary and tertiary care, where appropriate, to achieve an integrated service for patients.
  • Develop such special skills and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development of the department, in particular undergraduate and postgraduate education.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
  • Ensure own practice is up-to-date. This will include taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance Review.
  • Operate a system of cover for annual, study and professional leave with the current Consultants in post.
  • Deputise for absent colleagues, as far as is practicable.
  • Foster effective working relationships between various members of the Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Neonatal Directorates and wider Division, including Managerial, Midwifery, Nurse, Professional, Secretarial and Technical staff.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council.
  • Consultants will not be on duty for the labour ward whilst being timetabled for other clinical duties, such as antenatal or gynaecology clinics. 

Working for our organisation

The post holder will join a fantastic multi-disciplinary team based at the Lancashire Women & Newborn Centre.  This is a purpose built, modern unit located on the Burnley General Hospital site, and is the largest in-patient consultant led obstetric unit in the North West.    It provides centralised state-of-the-art maternity and gynaecology services. 

The Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre includes 5 operating theatres, a consultant led maternity unit, midwife led birthing centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3), general, emergency and specialist gynaecology services.   There is also a stand alone midwife-led birthing unit off the Hospital site in Blackburn. 

Across all our sites we pride ourselves on our teaching and for providing a great experience for trainee doctors.

We have received excellent feedback from medical students, foundation yearoctors and specialty trainees.   

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It is envisaged that the successful applicant will strengthen the clinical and academic focus of the Directorate by providing a Clinical Service to meet demands both from within the hospital and from the community.

 The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. 

The exact programme activity allocation will be subject to agreement with the Clinical Director; an indicative Job Plan is included below.  The distribution of programmed activities will be similar to that of the other Consultants. The remaining PA’s reflect supporting professional activities.  These may include teaching, audit, research and CPD.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCOG or appropriate Specialist Qualification
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (“equivalence” must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • ATSM Labour ward practice
  • Appropriate experience in labour ward management
Desirable criteria
  • Maximum time as Registrar 10 years
  • Experience relevant to needs of the department.
  • Further ATSM pertinent to obstetrics and gynaecology practice (or equivalent)

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of political context within which we operate
  • Knowledge of principles of audit with evidence of participation.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities
  • Ability to manage and lead the O&G firm and multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
  • Evidence of maternity database management/use
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a management course or programme
  • Negotiation skills experience
  • Experience of Risk Management programmes
  • Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making
  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate
  • Evidence of management and administration experience

Research, Teaching & Training Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to Medical, Nursing staff and other disciplines
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising Junior Medical staff
  • Evidence of training for educational supervision as per GMC guidance.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
  • Publications in relevant peerreviewed journals in the last 5 years
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
