Applications are invited for the role of Senior level (ST6-7 or post CCT) Clinical Fellow in Women's Health to commence as soon as possible for a fixed term period of 6 months.
The post is primarily based at Burnley General Hospital There is an on call commitment on the 2nd on call rota which has a 1 in 9 frequency, this is a full shift rota including blocks of nights. Occasionally, the postholder will be expected to deliver outpatient clinics and gynaecology ward cover to the Royal Blackburn Hospital (Monday to Friday only). We also provide outpatient services to Rossendale Hospital, 8 miles away.
The Lancashire Womens & Newborn Centre is located on the Burnley General site and we provide satellite clinics across East Lancashire to ensure ease of access for the local population. We provide a full range of clinics in both obstetrics and gynaecology and all members of the team have a sub speciality interest. We have an outstanding reputation as a training unit.
Candidates must have full registration with the GMC and meet all the necessary requirements of the person specification.
Main duties of the job
- The postholder will carry out a range of duties covering many aspects of Women’s Health. These include covering labour ward, antenatal ward and postnatal ward, elective caesarean section lists, the emergency gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, working in antenatal and gynaecology outpatients, and elective and emergency gynaecology theatre lists. All duties will be undertaken with suitable senior support.
- There is an on call commitment on the 2nd on call rota. This is a full shift rota including blocks of nights. The postholder will be the ‘senior registrar’ during on call shifts, working alongside a more junior registrar and 2 SHOs. There are 2 on call consultants (one for obstetrics and one for gynaecology) who provide support from home out of hours.
- The postholder will be expected to provide active senior medical input into the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of women in the hospital.
- The postholder will also be expected to taken an active role in management of acute gynaecological admissions and gynaecological emergencies.
- The postholder will be expected to demonstrate excellent medical leadership, communication and multidisciplinary team working.
- We have ample opportunities for the postholder to develop their own skills and special interests, and are keen to support the candidate in studying towards ATSMs/SITMs and/or completing CESR.
Working for our organisation
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit comprises a high-risk Birth suite with 20 rooms, antenatal and postnatal wards, a maternity triage, an antenatal day unit, 3 Obstetric theatres, a dedicated gynaecology ward, and a 7-day gynaecology assessment and early pregnancy assessment unit. There is an alongside midwifery-led birth centre. There are day-case and inpatient gynaecology theatre sessions running daily (often 2 or 3 theatre lists running concurrently).
Our maternity service has recently been rated ‘good’ by the CQC.
Outpatient activity includes, but is not limited to: general gynaecology, colposcopy, hysteroscopy, urogynaecology, fertility and recurrent miscarriage.
We have a large fetal medicine unit staffed by 4 consultants. We have a strong working relationship with our colleagues in our Level 3 neonatal unit.
We are a BSGE accredited centre for endometriosis.
There are 25 Consultants in post.
Other staff include: 3 specialty doctors/Obstetric and Gynaecology speciality trainees/Obstetric and Gynaecology locally employed doctors (JCFs and SCFs)/Foundation doctors

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCOG part 2
- Completion of RCOG core and intermediate modules in RCOG eportfolio (or equivalent)
- Eligible to work in the UK
Desirable criteria
- MRCOG 3
- Completion of RCOG advanced training study module (ATSM) (or equivalent)
- Intention to initiate/complete RCOG ATSM/SITM
Professional/Statutory Registration
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
- A minimum of 3 years’ UK experience at registrar level at the time of starting in post
Desirable criteria
- Currently working at senior registrar (ST6-7) level
Skills/Knowledge/Ability
Essential criteria
- Obstetric skills, with evidence of confirmed competency (by way of OSAT or equivalent):1) Caesarean section – intermediate complexity 2) Rotational deliveries – at least one modality from manual rotation/rotational forceps or rotational ventouse 3) Third degree perineal tear repair
- Gynaecology skills, with evidence of confirmed competency (by way of OSAT or equivalent): 1) Surgical evacuation of uterus 2) Surgical management of Bartholin’s abscess
Desirable criteria
- Gynaecology skills, with evidence of confirmed competency (by way of OSAT or equivalent): 1) Diagnostic laparoscopy 2) Hysteroscopy 3) Laparoscopic management of ectopic pregnancy
- Ultrasound 1) Intermediate obstetric or gynaecology ultrasound module completion
- Evidence of recent attendance at: 1) PROMPT 2) CTG course
