 Consultant in Pain Management and Acute Pain Lead 

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic colleague to work in Chronic Pain in a multidisciplinary team of Consultants, Nurses, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Admin colleagues. 

The role also includes leading the In-patient Acute Pain Service working with a team of Specialist Nurses.

An unaesthetic theatre session is included in the job plan which will enable the postholder to maintain their skills and competencies in the anaesthetic management of patients.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide clinical input (a mix of inpatient ward rounds, outpatient clinics and theatre sessions) to both the acute in-patient service and the chronic pain management service (detailed timetable to be agreed with the postholder).

Working for our organisation

The East Lancashire Chronic Pain Management Service is an integral part of the wider Integrated MSK, Pain and Rheuamtology Service (IMPReS). It is a specialized multidisciplinary service for adults who have longstanding pain, aiming to improve quality of life through a range of evidence- based approaches.

 

The Inpatient Acute Pain Service provides a comprehensive pain service to all surgical specialties in the Trust. These include major vascular, maxillo-facial, ENT, orthopedic (including paediatric orthopedic) cases; colo-rectal cancer (incorporating an enhanced recovery and CPEX-testing programme) and tertiary hepato-biliary surgery; as well as major gynecological cases; and ophthalmic and dental surgery.

At the Royal Blackburn Hospital there is a 40 -bedded critical care and post -operative care unit. In addition, there is a 24-hour outreach service.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post will facilitate the provision of care to chronic and acute pain patients and leadership for the inpatient acute pain service.  The work split will be approximately 6.5 sessions for chronic pain management and 3.5 sessions for the inpatient acute pain service. The latter includes an anaesthetic theatre session. The job plan includes 1.5 SPA.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • • FRCA or equivalent (included on the GMC’s Specialist Register in Anesthetics).
  • • Clinical Experience and training equivalent to Advanced Specialist Training in Pain Medicine
  • • ACLS / ALS
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or MD or PhD
  • Management training Course

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent clinical skills including community care and Hospital based practice
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written and good networking skills
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and support a multiprofessional team, and to be able to work effectively and sensitively within it.
  • Ability to demonstrate a sensitivity to the needs of a multi-cultural community
  • Ability to work constructively with other agencies
  • Evidence of service developments and administrative skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload, to delegate responsibilities as appropriate and to supervise staff
  • Membership of the British Pain Society

  • Awareness of changes in NHS organisation and work patterns

Education and training

  • Experience in teaching under graduates, post graduates, nurses and professions allied to medicine
  • Experience of clinical audit, Quality Improvement and understanding of the process

  • Teaching the teachers course or equivalent
