Applications are invited for Resident Neonatal Consultant post based at the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre, Burnley, which is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Neonatal Network. 

The post holders will join a team of 7.5 WTE non resident Consultant Neonatologists.  The resident component is limited to 7 resident night shifts covering middle grade rota in an 18 week cycle. The rest of the time the post holder will work in a Consultant capacity.

The state of the art Neonatal Unit at Burnley is purpose built to BAPM specification. The unit has 14 ITU/HDU cots and 20 Special care cots.   

 

Main duties of the job

  1. The post holder will be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible with Consultant Neonatal colleagues for the provision of inpatient neonatal services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust.
  2. The post holder will aim to deliver high quality neonatal care with the help of the existing Neonatal Team.
  3. The post holder will assist consultant colleagues in the continued development of a consultant led approach to Neonatal paediatrics.
  4. The post holder will share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the team.
  5. The post holder will be the hot week Consultant 1 in 9 including 1 in 9 weekends
  6. The post holder will run Consultant clinics at both Blackburn and Burnley sites 

Working for our organisation

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of 550,000 in the Pennine Lancashire area. Services are provided from our two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital and from our community rehabilitation wards at Pendle Community Hospital, Accrington Victoria Hospital and Clitheroe Community Hospital

Burnley General Teaching Hospital is the site for the East Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre and is the largest in-patient consultant led obstetric unit in the North West. There is also a midwife-led birthing unit off the Hospital site in Blackburn.

The ELHT neonatal unit is a purpose built, state of the art build, designed to the highest specifications as per BAPM standards.

The Neonatal Unit has 6 intensive care cots, 8 high dependency cots and 20 special care cots with a total cot capacity of 34 cots. In addition there are 2 isolation cots. 

The unit caters for a birth rate of ~6000 deliveries per year. The NICU at LWNC offers Level 3 care for babies needing ongoing medical intensive care at all gestations, including those born at borderline threshold of viability. The unit provides a full range of specialist neonatal services including all modes of invasive and non-invasive ventilation (volume guarantee, pressure support and HFOV), therapeutic cooling and inhaled nitric oxide. The unit has onsite facilities for Cranial Ultrasound and Neonatal Echocardiography.

The post holder will be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible with Consultant Neonatal colleagues for the provision of inpatient neonatal services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust

The post holder will jointly provide some weekday night and weekend night cover (7 nights in 18 week cycle per resident consultant) jointly with another resident consultant to cover 1 slot on the middle tier rota. They will each have a hot week, special care week, High dependency and postnatal ward weeks on the Consultant rota.

The post holder will participate in the consultant ward week system of care on the neonatal unit. During the Intensive care week, all fixed commitments are cancelled. As the hot week/special care consultant, they will undertake a daily ward round and will supervise the work of junior medical staff throughout the unit.  

The post holder will be the hot week Consultant 1 in 9 including 1 in 9 weekends and will run Consultant clinics at Burnley site as per the job plan

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • 2 year relevant clinical neonatal experience in busy Neonatal tertiary Unit and relevant allied specialty
  • On the GMC’s Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT of scheduled interview
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • NLS Certification
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • Valid BLS Training
Desirable criteria
  • Neonatal CCT
  • NLS Instructor

Person Specification

Essential criteria
  • Two or more years training/experience in Neonatology at regional/level 3 units/allied specialties
  • Experience and training in child protection. Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Management of wide range of Neonatal problems including care of complex medical and surgical babies. Experience in newer modalities of ventilation e.g. HFO, inhaled nitric oxide etc.
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust
  • Understanding and experience of performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training
  • Awareness of basic research methods
  • Familiarity with evidence based practice

  • Experience in volume ventilation, Echo skills
  • Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship
  • Experience of organising teaching programmes or events
  • Previous research projects/publications
