Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Dental Nurse to join our team at Clitheroe Community Hospital within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Dental Service.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual, with excellent communication skills to assist in the delivery of urgent and routine dental care. You must be a qualified dental nurse, and you will have a good standard of education and the ability to work well within a team.

You will mainly work at your base clinic; however you may also be required to work at our other clinics, covering sickness and annual leave. You will have opportunity to study for post registration qualifications including sedation and will have access to plentiful CPD and clinical supervision.

An enhanced criminal records check will be required for this post.

Main duties of the job

  • Communication on a daily basis with Lancashire & South Cumbria foundation trust Dental Service staff, service users, service users parents and carers and Health Professionals.
  • Providing oral health information and advice to service users, parents and carers.
  •  Assisting the Clinician throughout treatment of the service user, anticipating the needs of both clinician and service user.
  • Act as chaperone.
  • To care and supervise service users undergoing general anaesthesia, in collaboration with the anaesthetic staff at the Surgical Day Case Unit, Burnley General Hospital / Royal Blackburn Hospital and to give pre and post-operative advice
  • Preparing surgery and all clinical apparatus for clinical activity.
  • Arranging appropriate instruments, medicaments and materials for clinical use.  This requires handling fine, specialised instruments and manipulation and transfer of these instruments throughout all procedures.
  • Assembly and dismantling of specialised equipment for use and cleaning, following Aseptic non touch technique. Use and maintain all equipment in line with manufacturers recommendation and ensure they are regularly maintained by appropriate person.
  • Decontamination of dental unit and water bottle, adhering to the infection control policies and procedures.
  • Checking Service User’s details and advising clinician of any circumstances relevant to treatment.
  • Recording of dental charting electronically/paper based.
  • Taking part in clinical and non-clinical audit as and when required

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Dental Nurse (National Certificate for Dental Nurses or NVQ Level 3)
  • Registered with the General Dental Council
Desirable criteria
  • One or more of the following: Certificate in Dental Radiology, Certificate in Oral Health Promotion, Certificate in Dental Sedation, Nursing Certificate in Orthodontic, Nursing Certificate in Dental Anaesthetic, Nursing Certificate in Special Care Dentistry.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of the local dental situation
Desirable criteria
  • IT Skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years’ Experience of assisting chairside in the Dental surgery
