Job overview

To support/assist the Service Manager to ensure that anyone affected by cancer receives personally tailored information covering practical, emotional and financial concerns/needs.

As the Volunteer within the Macmillan information and Support Service, you will be here to welcome and greet visitors, making people feel comfortable, listening to and sign posting people to the appropriate service or Healthcare Professional.

Main duties of the job

Welcoming people and putting them at ease – this may be by making a cup of tea and having a chat.

Supporting people by responding to offering a quiet place to talk room and by involving the information Service Manager as needed.

Providing a friendly listening ear.

Explain the resources and services available.

Collecting and recording information about people who use the service using data base or paper questionnaires

Answering the service telephone and accurately recording the messages, referring complex enquiries to the Information Service Manager.

Keeping the Information displays stocked and up-to-date.

Printing leaflets.

On occasions, setting up and closing down the service.

There will be opportunities to be involved with local events, representing the Hospital Trust and Macmillan.

 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
