Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology
NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant
Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will help to develop the local diabetes and endocrine service.
The clinical duties are mainly based at Preston with the occasional clinic on the Chorley site. We have very well-established links with the Primary Care Networks. The post-holder will be involved in developing the diabetes antenatal service and will also have involvement in the young person’s and type 1 diabetes clinics, as well as general endocrine clinics.
The successful applicant will have opportunities to develop other interests within diabetes and endocrinology. To facilitate this, we have strong links with paediatrics, vascular, podiatry, obstetrics, gynaecology, clinical biochemistry, renal and neurosurgical departments within the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be responsible for general medical, diabetes and endocrine inpatients admitted to Ward 18, on a rotational basis. This is supported by Foundation, GP and Internal Medical Trainees, as well as Specialty Trainees in diabetes/endocrinology. There is a provisional plan to move to seven day consultant cover on the ward.
They will specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Services for the Directorate.
Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the co-ordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley Hospitals.
Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the area.
Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
The post holder will initially be appointed 10 programmed activities, however in the future there may be the option to increase this with your agreement.
Working for our organisation
There is a strong team-based focus with dedicated Diabetes Specialist Team members working between primary and secondary care. There are several joint specialist clinics including diabetes foot, diabetes pregnancy, endocrine pregnancy, gynaecology endocrine and pituitary clinics.
We have a dedicated endocrine specialist nurse, and a full range of dynamic endocrine tests are performed in our investigation unit. There is a Diabetes centre on the Chorley and South Ribble site. At Preston much of the outpatient diabetes work is delivered from the Minerva Centre - a purpose-built facility built into the new stand at Preston North End football ground 10 minutes from RPH.
The Directorate actively supports undergraduate medical education and medical students are linked to Consultant teams. There will be many opportunities for the appointee to become involved in undergraduate teaching.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the active postgraduate teaching programme.
