Consultant Haematologist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

This Consultant Haematologist post forms part of an ongoing investment and development plan for the Haematology Services in Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR).

As one of four new posts it is an exciting time for the organisation with the reinstating of locally provided haematology services. The consultant team will be complemented with an experienced specialist nursing and laboratory team. The Haematologists will work within the two large Directorates of Pathology and Oncology in Lancashire and South Cumbria’s tertiary centre.

The Trust services are based at two main hospital sites – Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley & South Ribble District General Hospital. The Haematology department is provided across both sites.

The Trust’s hospitals provide general hospital services to a local population of 390,000 and specialist tertiary health care services to a wider population of 1.8 million across Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Trust is one of the larger NHS providers in the Northwest employing over 8000 staff and with an annual income in excess of £600 million.

These are substantive appointments with the ability to develop sub-speciality interest.

Generous relocation packages are available and recruitment premia by separate negotiation.

Main duties of the job

The clinical commitments of these posts will include responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care of patients with haematological disorders at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. The duties also involve provision of laboratory haematology services.

An indicative job plan will include (average per week) 3 outpatient clinics, MDT, inpatient and chemotherapy day case unit ward rounds, diagnostic laboratory work and DCC admin and on call.

Appointees are expected to undertake activity at both Royal Preston and Chorley District Hospital.

As part of the development of the service there will be a number of additional departmental roles available, including Laboratory director, Clinical director, Research/Education and Governance. Applicants looking for a more innovative role combination, part time and annualised job plans are welcome and valued in the organisation.
