Job overview

Are you looking for a new challenge?

Do you work well under pressure?

Are you a team player?

If yes, this job may be perfect for you!

We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals for a full time Band 6 post to work in our busy, modern and well-equipped Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratory at Royal Preston Hospital.

We value our staff and fully support their professional development. We are an IBMS approved training laboratory and actively encourage completion of the Specialist Portfolio and CPD.

Main duties of the job

Our large Haematology and Blood Transfusion department is based at Royal Preston Hospital, which is a Major Trauma Centre serving Preston, South Ribble and Chorley. The site provides specialist Plastics, Neurology, Renal and Oncology services along with routine services.

Our main equipment in Haematology comprises a fully-tracked Sysmex 9000 system which includes Digital Morphology, CS 5100 series analysers and TOSOH G11 for Haemoglobinopathy Screening. Automation in Transfusion is provided by Diamed IH1000 analysers and we have remote access Haemobank fridges for remote issue of blood units. You will be expected to perform routine and specialist procedures.

You will be based at Royal Preston Hospital, however you may be required to work across sites at both Royal Preston and Chorley hospitals, thus will need to be able to move between sites.

The role can sometimes be quite physical, with moderate moving and handling requirements, therefore you will need to able to move around the laboratory and assist in the movement of loads. You will be expected to work a 37.5 hr/ week (average) shift rota pattern that includes daytime, evenings, overnight, weekends and Bank Holidays once you have achieved competence during a satisfactory probationary period, for which appropriate AFC enhancements will be paid.

Working for our organisation

To be recruited to Band 6, you require a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/ Blood Transfusion or equivalent.  Applicants without the Specialist Portfolio/ equivalent are welcome to apply; after initial recruitment to Band 5 level, an applicant without the Specialist Portfolio moves to Band 6 once allocated a position on the OOH rota. Progression up the Band 6 scale will require a completed Specialist Portfolio. Applicants for Band 5 are need HCPC registration, however those that have completed the registration portfolio and have applied for registration may be considered.

We have 10,000 fantastic people delivering quality services to our patients.  Whatever your role, you help look after 370,000 people in our local area & give specialist care to 1.5 million people across Lancashire & Cumbria. Working with us gives you the knowledge and sense of pride that every activity you do genuinely does make a difference to support our patients & staff, ensuring we keep thriving & delivering outstanding healthcare right across our local towns. You’ll have access to varied development opportunities, learn new skills, meet fab people & do things you’d never have done.  You’ll make an impact, be challenged to think differently, be bold & help innovate to keep improving things.
