Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for experienced Midwives to join our Antenatal Clinic Midwifery team based at Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital.

Antenatal Clinic is an outpatient maternity service, operating week days, Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8am-6pm.

As part of our Midwifery team you'll provide midwifery care to women and birthing people who are receiving both midwife-led care and shared antenatal care within our hospital based antenatal clinics. You'll need to have a robust understanding of antenatal care pathways and will thrive in a fast paced clinical environment.

You will be an excellent communicator, who is also great at listening to women and their families, helping them to achieve a high quality, positive and safe experience through the development of personalised care plans.

Main duties of the job

The provision of antenatal care to women and birthing people which aligns to Trust and NICE guidance.

Working in conjunction with the MDT to provide high quality care for complex pregnancies.

Working within specialist clinics for maternal medicine.

Supporting midwifery led clinics for women and birthing people following their dating scans, those require Anti D injections, additional blood clinics and screening assessments.

Ensuring the saving babies lives care bundle is adhered to by ensuring CO monitoring is performed, fetal growth risk assessments and surveillance following ultrasound scans and uterine artery dopplers, raising awareness of reduced fetal movements and performing regular risk assessments and relevant referrals where necessary.

Ensuring specimens and fail safe procedures and up-to-date and actioned timely.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Antenatal Clinic is a growing service to provide excellent antenatal care provision for women and families throughout their pregnancy.

Duties to include, but not be limited to:

  • Assist and support the lead midwife in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes
  • Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation
  • Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by less experienced staff
  • Ensure a high standard of Midwifery care is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines
  • Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care
  • Promote provision of education and health promotion
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards, following 18 months commencement in post
  • Evidence of continuing education or development
  • Up-to-date with all essential training and appraisal
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership course
  • Management course
  • NIPE qualification or willingness to work towards

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate fulfillment of Band 5 preceptorship and progression to Band 6.
  • Awareness of changes within Midwifery practice
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of coordinating a team
  • Able to manage obstetric emergencies in all settings.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Maintains own reflective practice
  • Demonstrates effective listening skills and communication skills.
  • Confident in teaching and assessing student midwives, midwives, and doctors
  • Able to conduct relationships in such a way that conflict is minimalised.

  • Knowledge of ethical issues.
  • Basic understanding of financial management.
  • Evidence of innovation in practice.
  • Knowledge of research and development.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement.
  • Has been involved in audits.
